Baseline score??

My dc had to move school part way through reception year (relocating)and when I went to tell his headteacher she said she was sad dc was leaving because he has a really good baseline score.

Was is a baseline score and how do they calculate it?

I have another child starting reception in september and I'm just intrigued about it because I'd never heard about it and wasn't sure whether to ask his preschool teacher about it or if it's one of those things they don't consider important to discuss with parents?

Any clarification would be wonderful.

In our LEA the baseline score shows some basic level of where the child is at as they enter school in the areas of learning we then assess them half termly and tick the sheet where appropreate. A high score may show a bright child.

Ah thank you so much. That makes sense.

Thinking back when DC1 started reception it was a few weeks before they organised the class into coloured groups (obviously indicating attainment discretely) so they must have waited until everyone had been assessed.

So it is done by the actual reception teacher and not the preschool education provider? I know that my DC in preschool right now is being assessed so his teacher can pass on an idea of how he's progressing to the school he'll be starting in September and I wondered if that was what that was.

Well in the school I work in the teacher takes half and I take the other half but it is done in the class yes. We do look at things passed on from pre school but we do our own baseline assesments.

Thanks Salimali for clearing that up for me. I appreciate the insight.
