I've got an autumn born!! DS is 5 in October. He just seems far too massive for nursery now, but I think he's got mixed feelings about going to Big Boy School.

Hai1988 · 08/06/2010 13:51

Yeah I know what you mean, he towers over the others at nursery

I've got a parent meeting on the 29th of this month to see his new classroom and meet his teacher and get general information.
Im kinda looking forward to it

Strange to hear you talk about your nearly 5 year olds getting ready to start school, as my DD is 5 next week and still seems so small to be nearly finishing her reception year. I have to admit to being a little jealous of you getting that extra time before they start school - enjoy this summer!

teddymummy · 08/06/2010 14:27

I have September born DTs starting in September too! Just spent the morning ironing on the name labels to a huge bag of M&S uniform that arrived this morning! I am so glad they will be older in the year becasue they definately are only just ready now and would not have been as a 'young' 4 year old. They have been at pre school for 3 years though- so have really grown out of it now and are looking forward to being at their big sister's school. They are not worried about it at all hvaing been at big school every day picking up their sister- and of course they will have each other. I have fingers crossed for a very smooth start. Whihc is just as well as I am returning to teaching in September myself.

Hai1988 · 08/06/2010 17:00

teddy you deseve a medal, ironing on loads of little lables.
Bring on me non washable pen
Really dont know what im gonna do with myself in sept, gonna try and find some p/t work i think, there only so much housework i can do in a day

there is already a thread about children starting in reception in Sept - cant link but think it is in the primary ed section.

feedthegoat · 08/06/2010 21:17

My ds is 5 in October and starting reception in October.

I know exactly what you mean about towering over the others at nursery. He is fairly tall for his age anyway, it gets commented on all the time!

He loves nursery/pre school and has a good group of friends. He is really looking forward to going. I think he will be fine but I'm glad he is amongst the oldest I must admit. I really feel for the summer born children who are nearly a year younger.

My only real worry at the moment is dinnertime. I know he'll struggle with parts of dressing and undressing and bum wiping but I'm sure he won't be alone in this. We are practising as much as possible!

Hai1988 · 08/06/2010 22:19

yeh im sure they'll pick it these things up as they will see there friends doing it and wanna join in
I'm sure my ds just pretends he cant do somethings just so he gets mummys help

and feed i know there is, i just thought i'd start a thread with for ppl with autumn babies as in the other thread it seems to be all summer babies that are a year younger than my ds

DD2 will be 4 in October and we are just waiting to hear if she has a place going into F1 in September. Where we are the DC can start school in F1 but it is not compulsory. A lot of parents would prefer (I think) to wait until the DC are a little older but we are told that if they don't do F1 they can't guarantee a place in F2 so don't really had a choice.

Children were assessed at the school on Sunday and Monday and we are supposed to be getting a phone call or letter today to advise whether they passed their assessments

teddymummy · 09/06/2010 11:17

Where are you based Mumoverseas?

mumoverseas · 09/06/2010 12:05

I'm in Saudi Arabia. Thank god (allah) that I got a phone call from the school whilst out shopping this morning saying that they were delighted to offer DD a place in September and the thought she would keep them on their toes

angelene · 09/06/2010 12:30

My DD is 5 at the beginning of October and more than ready for school. The problem I can foresee is when she twigs that her two best friends are going to a different school - together. So I'm hoping to do plenty of school holiday activities with them, as they've been at nursery together for 4 years - most of their lives!

The other issue is sorting out after-school childcare, the school is almost brand new (opened Sept 08) and is still consulting on an after-school club. I really REALLY hope they sort it out but I'm seeing a CM next Friday in case. TBH the thought makes me feel a bit ill - apologies to all CMs - because she's been so happy at her brilliant nursery for such a long time, but needs must.

Can't wait to start shopping for uniform!

teddymummy · 09/06/2010 14:52

We used to live in Saudi Arabia- just been back in the UK for a year. Not missing the heat!!
Great news about the school place.
Angelene, I know what you mean about the childcare- the school here has no after/before school care- am having to sort out something else as no childminders here at all - rural area.

Karoleann · 09/06/2010 16:42

My DS isn't 5 til May, but has suddently started being very naughty - I'm sure he's ready. (I'm not sure I am though). Its only a small class, 16 and its literally only a 5 minute walk from our house, which will be lovely.
He's definately going to tower over the others as he's 116cm!

mumoverseas · 09/06/2010 17:50

teddymummy small world! Where in KSA were you? We are in Riyahd. Damm hot here now, almost 50 degrees when doing lunchtime pick up from nursery. Am back to the UK in 3 weeks for the summer and can't wait. How did you find it returning to the real world? Am worried if we stay here too long we'll never return

teddymummy · 09/06/2010 20:51

We were in Riyadh too. I remember those 50 degree days. We were only there 2 years and always left the day after school ended to get out of the heat. It has been really brilliant getting my independence back, but I do miss the fantastic social life! Never drank so much champagne in my life!!! Also I find that although people are very nice where we are now, they do not make the same effort to meet up as they do abroad. In Riyadh you really had to make friends quickly and you were all thrown together and just got on with it. I enjoy going out in the car and loving the choice of fresh food/ fruit/veg etc in the supermarket.
Don't think it matters too much how long you stay away because if this is your own culture you get back into it easily. We were jsut a bit worried about being out of the UK job market too long.
Do miss having a lovely house maid as well, she was great with the children and sobbed when we left because we had been so kind to her.
All in all we are glad to be back - life seems more real here- but there are things we miss.

mumoverseas · 10/06/2010 04:55

teddymummy very small world. We were on Faisalia compound (near Granada) for a few years and now on Salwa which is in the middle of no-where by Janadiriya. You are so right about the independence. I've not escaped from here since early January and can't wait til I'm back in the UK (19 days subject to BA). I'll love being back for the summer and having my independance but oh will I miss my houseboy and nanny
I've 'met' a few people on here recently who used to live in KSA. Should do a meet up (sorry for hijack OP)

teddymummy · 10/06/2010 12:48

We were on Al Hamra, and had some friends on Salwa. Yes should do a KSA thread, but such a small circle of people we are bound to find out who we are in RL!!!

Back to original thread... have now finished the ironing of all little labels for 3 children!! Arghh! Just got to get the jumpers etc from school on the new parents evening. Am hoping my boys will be ready to 'learn' by the time they start in septemeber- just have such a short attention span atm. They cannot write their own names, which I would like them to try to learn over the summer. That would give us something to aim for. They can count a bit. They are very chatty and inquisitive and I know they will take a great interest in evrything going on at school. but I worry they will not want to do any of the more reading/writing based tasks. Just so glad that they are autumn born babies, especially with being boys.

Back to thread, we were lucky enough to be given quite a bit of 'free' uniform by a friend and only need a few bits so will go and buy them next week so I can start sewing on name tags.
DD cannot write her own name but knows some letters and can count quite well (also to 10 in french and arabic)

teddymummy · 10/06/2010 19:04

I was at BIS!! But don't think I taught your DCs!

mumoverseas · 10/06/2010 20:43

The compound was a giveaway Guess we'll never know if you taught them.

teddymummy · 11/06/2010 11:43

Year 4...

mumoverseas · 11/06/2010 12:45

Lucky you teddymummy, you seem to have escaped my eldest two. DD1 (14 today) left in year 7 to go to boarding school (as too many ferrel teenagers out here causing distractions) and DS1 left last year after GCSEs.
Can't believe DD2 will be starting 'big' school in September

teddymummy · 11/06/2010 14:04

Yes, can understand that, not a place for teenagers really. Especially girls.

Big school does seem rather scary for me too at the moment. suddenly my 2 baby boys will have to grow up. Will def not have any more kids so this is the end of an era for our family. Once they start school they grow up so quick.
