'Walk to school Week'- why, why, why?

What IS the point of this money wasting exercise?

Surely mums (as mums it practically always is!) who drive their DCs to school, by and large either do it because:

-they work and unless they have a very understanding employer who will accommodate them being late for a week, may lose their job over this; or

-mums whom wild horses wouldn't induce to walk, let alone a poxy sticker scheme!

Once again it's attempting societal engineering via schooling rather than attack the 'core' of the problem- if, indeed it IS a problem- being the fact none of us have any time any more and many of us have mortgages or rent to pay! Furthermore, really, why expect DCs to trog to school in all weathers when we, as adults, take the car everywhere?

I wish schools would spend the money on sticking to the point and schooling our DCs not rewarding behaviour 'walkers' already do and guilt tripping those who can't!

I've seen parents driving less than half a mile to our primary school - I suspect, because THEY HAVE A CAR AND WANT US ALL TO KNOW IT!!! They arrive early so that they can park on the yellow lines and chat to their friends.

I am also fed up of the "BUT I WORK!" whine. So do I. I cycle. So neh.

Took a load of Cubs on a hike at the weekend, and was shocked at how many of them were whining less than 1 mile in. My DD (5) walked the 4 miles easily, and my DS (3) managed most of it. Three of the Cubs had to have a sleep and a lie-down afterwards.

This is why children need to be encouraged to walk. If it takes stickers and pester power, so be it.

OP - there are far more people who claim to have to use the car than there are who really need to. Sure, walking may be the less attractive choice, but taking the car was still a choice.

If you feel guilt-tripped, perhaps it is because there is a good reason for that...

You may find that there is more money for the rent / mortgage if you use the car a little less and walk a little more.

DH drives our children to school (about a mile), and drives on to work afterwards. Cycling would just make him even later

No guilt here though. Guilt is surely for when you are doing something you know is wrong? We are doing what we have to do.

Now there is a prime example of where public spending could be cut
