Please help! Alternatives to reading scheme

dd is 5.5 - after a slowish start when she refused point blank to even try to read, she's really got the idea and is doing really well, and trying really hard. She's using the Ginn 360 books which she doesn't seem particularly bothered by (though they are ghastly) but I would really like to find something else that will stimulate her but not put her off that she can read at home. She does pick books off the bookshelf, but they are either ones she knows by heart or way too hard - we seem to be struggling to find good alternatives.

I'm tempted to just go to the library and find an alternative and less deathly dull reading scheme, and not present it to her as a "reading book" but just a book, but did wonder if there are any other books out there that might be good for her.

I have no idea if she's a "good" reader, and am not that bothered - the school are very keen that they should all go at their own pace, so don't do comparisons but we seem to have a real window of opportunity to get her inspired by reading, as she's asking to do it all the time.

The cover of the Ginn books she's on is purple, if that's any help. I've slightly lost track - possibly a level 5?

How about the read at home ladybird series. They tend to be your traditional stories - little red riding hood, princess and the pea, hanzle and gretle etc, they come at different levels.

I use that, and have to say my ds finds it fantastic, loves the books, we deselect any schemes he tries and isn't keen on. And waits for his parcel of new books to arrive on a weekly basis.

That does look good. Will check it out when am at the pc (phone not so handy at that). And she would love the fairy tales, that is a really good idea. All the ones we have are quite tricky but she loves having them read to her.

I have to do something. She was up at 6.30 trying to read me some awful thing about squirrels which was sent home from school
