Are there particular schools we should try for if we want particular languages?

Language-learning does start in primary schools nowadays, not secondary schools?

No knowledge of these areas but my DC have learned some German and some French at their state primary.

I'm guessing it's simialr in most primaries. Why the urge for multi-lingual learning? What specific languages are you after?

MFL will be given an hour of curriculum time from September as far as I know.
My school currently teaches Spanish.

DW thinks most British schools focus on French. I suspect there's much more variety out there, but want to find something that's effective.

We're lucky because there are a lot of good native speakers of languages who are also qualified teachers in this area. Our local secondaries offer French, Spanish and German to all of their pupils. We chose Spanish, looking at how widely spoken it was world-wide, and ease of learning (yes, Mandarin is the fashionable language at the moment, but it's not as easy)
Language teaching in Primary is less about exam success and more about building enjoyment, interest and oral fluency, so I'm not sure what you are expecting.
