I'm well versed in the ARA booklet, but only for Yr 2, so thank goodness you were here!

R, I know what you are going thru paddingtonbear1 my DD1 is a year behind and altho she makes progress each year, each year she is still a year behind. I have asked before about holding her back and have been told no. It seems that unless they are statemented or have had special circumstances it is vertially impossible. After everyones brilliant responses, I think it would do her more harm than good to hold her bk. I spoke to someone yesterday who had similar experiences and found that few years later child caught up and then struggled as they were wanting to do more and couldnt move up. Makes me so mad with all this early testing as we werent tested and so gave us time to catch up!

Hi. I'm interested to know what you decided to do and any information you found out. I'm in a similar position myself and its not easy getting information. The person I need to talk to is on leave! Thanks

A child is required to be vac in their chronological age by the end of each key stage. Reception, year 2 and year 6.

If the child has a statement there may be allowance for out of age within that statement.

It can cause real problems as so many of out of age children leave school at 16 but from year 10 and so have no qualifications at all. Theybwould have got gcses if they had stayed at school.
