I am asking for a friend, her son recently had a rib injury so she filled in a medication form for the school to give him paracetamol.

She has found out today the school has given it for 18 days running every dinner time, 7mls, she only found out as her son said the school was running low (she sent a full bottle in) when she has questioned the school they have said that she didn't ring and let them know how long he needed it for, it was for 3 days.

She has spoken to the head who has said there is nothing she can do apologised and said she will amke sure it doesn't happen to another child.

So i am wanting your opinions please, thankyou

I think it wouldbe best in future to give any information on required medication in writing. I don't know what other steps she is envisaging but I personally would take the dc to a doctor and have him checked, 18 days is not good.

Did it not say on the form how long it was to be taken for?

Did your friend not go to collect the medication? Did she think the school had thrown it away?

I think the school are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I think your mate should take responsibility for her son's medication.

She should have only left enough medication for the required dose and with instructions written on the package and on the form. Some children are prescribed longterm use of paracetamol: my ds is: doctors have stressed that he must keep on taking it for more than a few days if he is to see any longterm effects. Yes, we all know this probably isn't very good for you, but some children have problems where they do actually need it. As it so happens we have decided it isn't worth it in ds' case- just trying to make the point that the school weren't to know that your friend's ds wasn't in a similar situation to my ds.

If it wasn't written on the form there is not much she can do. TBH she should have gone in a collected the bottle of medicine after the three days were finished to ensure no mix ups. As much her responsibility as the schools IMO

Our medical forms state when the mediation should start and when it should stop.

I ALWAYS collect the medicine at the end of the day and take it back in the morning. It just seems common sense to me. it its at my house then it can't be administered by mistake.
