Hi, My DD is born in jan 2005 but is out of the british system fo rthe moment and I get a bit confused. Should she start Y1 or Y2 next year? what is expected of her? she can decipher well but has problem with making phonics (hence reading). Is writing means copying a sentence or listening and then writing? what about maths? Thanks

She's just turned 5 so Reception now and year 1 come September. She'd be starting to decode phonics and maybe reading basic readers out loud, recognise numbers 1-10 or 20, shapes and patterns, form letters and probably recognise and write her name, follow a story and interact

Thanks for your answer I was worrying she was late as alot of my UK contact says their receptions kids learn to write and read, but she seems quite in advance by the look of it. I have to push the reading though

I would certainly expect a child in reception now to write and read their name as a basic minimum.

A child who was 5 in Jan would (in our school - only place I have exp of) probably be able to write simple sentences with phonetic spelling (ie not correct but how it sounds - porij for porridge for example) and read a basic ORT book of at least 8 pages - many will be reading a lot more.
