In year 2, when writing would you say that these words would be standard for children to be able to write and spell correctly and that if they can't it means their spelling is weak? beautiful, princess, thought, bought, brought

No I would not say those particular words are standard in Y2

They are not core words at KS1. I know plenty of year 4s who are nowhere near spelling those words reliably.

Actually, I know quite a few adults who couldn't spell them!

Hulababy · 06/05/2010 19:33

I would not expect many Y2 children to be able to spell those words, unless they had had them specifically to learn for a spelling test. Mind you, even then they would probably learn them and forget them IME!

Princess would be the easiest, although many would give prinses or prinsess before remembering it has a c in it.

thought, bought, brought would all be covered at the same time as same spelling rule.

Beautiful is the hardest.

My Yr2 ds has had the last three words in a spelling test but only because (as Hulababy says) it was the spelling rule he was learning at the time.

Not being able to spell those words would not have meant being classed as a weak speller at all.

My year 2 ds had these words last term in his spelling book. He is in the top spelling group though.

Well yes, if dd learned them for a test I'm sure she would be able to, but this was just free writing and I thought the teacher's expectations were way too high. I'm glad I wasn't alone in this opinion. Dd has always been considered a strong speller, so this has upset her.
