'girls aren't allowed in the cricket club'. At 11?!!? Surely that's not fair?

my dd who is in yr 6 in a middle school wanted to go to lunchtime cricket club. She has been told she can't as she's a girl. I've checked with her form teacher and he said, sorry, that's right.
I can't believe it. How the heck are we meant to encourage girls into sport like this? She's fed up cos they only have 8 places in rounders team (the number of seats in their minibus) although she gets to play in after skl knock abouts.
Surely they cant discriminate on gender?
Anyone know?

Have you asked why ? They cannot descriminate against your daughter if she wants to go ... that's utterly ridiculous!

Hulababy · 06/05/2010 20:38

Ask them WHY the team is only open to boys.

We have an external group come into the infant school i work at who do an after school cricket club. It accepts girls and boys.

omg somehow i have two threads on this, sorry

have asked and been told that sorry it is for boys only - they were given a list of the summer lunchtime and after school clubs at beg of term. she tried to go to cricket and was turned away. i checked with form teacher thinking she'd been mistaken, but no it was correct. I think i want to make a fuss but i'm not popular anyway.

she loves cricket and rounders and doesnt like many other sports/PE things at school . they are segregated for lessons for PE etc but why should this happen at a club? It's not like they are older teens when size/strength might be an issue

I don't know a lot about cricket but I do know that in footie girls can only play up to U10s (ie up to and including yr5).

This is I suppose because of the greater strength and power of boys as they get bigger - for safety reasons really.

Howevere I don't see that in cricket really, it's not really a contac sport is it. Seems rather unfair.

yes, i can see the argument for separating sexes in contact sports but not for cricket. And this is a fun type club not school team. Wondered about suggesting she starts a girls' tea, but she likes playing mixed.

How outrageous! Whoever made this totally sexist decision should be reminded that the England Womens Cricket team has actually won the World Cup; something which has never been achieved by the mens team.

Funnily enough our school has just announced a cricket club after school JUST FOR GIRLS for y5 and y6 and the boys are all upset!

I looked on the ECB website and found this

They'll have to give you a good reason or maybe refer them to the ECB rules.
