How much work do you do with your yr1 child?

Following on from a previous thread. Do you do homework/reading/spellings and thats it, or extra maths or literacy workbooks, or(shudder) Kumon? State schools by the way. Just interested...

In what way is this thread weird? Am I supposed to stop my willing child wanting to read to me?

lovecheese - it isn't weird at all.

I think those who are upset by this thread misunderstand what most people mean by "homework". My ds is expected to read with me at home and once a week brings home six spellings to learn. We've also been given a laminated card on "mental maths" which clearly instills the expectation that we should be encouraging him to play around with mental arithmetic, but does not require proof to be sent into school... I slightly resent the spellings occasionally, but have no objections to the rest, as I think as a parent not reading with my child or playing about with numbers with him would be failing him and missing out on a lot of fun. I think his school does a very good job of making him think these things are fun, as I never have to suggest these activities to him - he's constantly telling me sums he's worked out in his head and spends a very large portion of his spare time with his nose in a book.

Ds is in yr1 and the only homework is reading. I have a tendency just to go at his own pace as he is not that keen. I practise mental maths with him in a roundabout way so he doesn't realise we are actually doing it.

30 mins mon-thurs inc reading, numeracy and literacy (we have a home tutor scheme which works with national curriculam)

she does lots of stuff by herself like reading and writing stories

she loves it and its always led by her demand

Very, very little. We read the odd ORT book occasionally. Mind you, that may explain why her reading is still pretty poor.
