AIBTG (am I being too geeky) about the kid's work?

DS's school texted last week to say that next half term's Y1 project will be castles, knights and dragons. Please could we research it with our kids.

I trawled the house and dug out all our children's books on the subject. He's read two Horrible Histories, three Eyewitness books, two versions of various Arthurian legends, and sundry books on dragons/saints. Oh, and we've sidetracked onto, variously, the Crusades, Thomas Becket, the Peasants' Revolt and Chaucer.

I've known I was getting it wrong since the one time he dressed up as the periodic table for nursery World Book day, and when we got to the playground, every other kid was a character from Lazy Town.

Should I just let the school direct him in future? Will his teacher hate me when he gets to class on Monday? Have he and I ensured that he'll be bored to death for the next 6 weeks of carpet time? Why am I such an ass? Does anyone else do this?

I suspect I will be the same way starting in September!!!!

Yes, we still do.
Perhaps fewer books and reading, more visits to see first-hand sources? Choosing a specific topic area that he's interested in and getting creative? key characters? My lad is fascinated by the 14th century. I hope yours has some tolerance for the fact that the Y1 topic may be a mixture of fact and fiction. Mine struggled with inaccuracies!

Did you do St George and the Dragon?

Take a look at www.ologyworld.com/ and go to dragonology he will love it!

ButterPie · 17/04/2010 08:57

Periodic table! Love it! I say keep on if he is enjoying himself, he'll thank you later.

Mrz: We did St George and the dragon. In spades. Thank you so much for the Ology World link! It devoured an entire morning and taught him how to pronounce Knucker and Wyvern, both of which I had guessed at very, very incorrectly.

Goblinchild: I'm assuming from your advice that that's how you do things, and yes - we do too. The 14th century is a glorious sort of century for a geeky family - am not surprised your lad loves it.

tbh just as bad with science here. ds loves to learn but i try to let him guide me. He wants home school today with the main aims: learning to colour in the lines, forming number 9, getting letter formation right so he can start joined up writing, and running faster. However, i am busy it will have to wait til another day.

I use this site with my Y2 class. There are lots of dragon and knight stories to watch and read.
