Trainers for PE

lottaluvin · 15/04/2010 13:05

I bought ds a fairly nice pair for PE in reception at the start of the year. They were kept on a peg at school in his sports bag, and worn twice a week at the max for about 15 weeks.

Now of course, he is too big for them and we are heading out at the weekend for another pair. I am loathe to buy another expensive pair of trainers for an hour a week, the teacher pulls a face if I ask for the gym bag so he can wear them at the weekends. Probably due to parents forgetting to bring back the gym bag.

Anyone buy those little black ones? We used to call them daps in Wales. I thought these would be ideal, but the other mums have said I'm mad, they don't support the feet etc.

Although I do buy seconds from Ebay I'm not keen on second hand shoes, especially sweaty trainers! Any other tips/bargains?

daps/gutties/plimsolls whatever you call them are fine

We have to supply trainers and pumps. One for outdoor PE on the field and one for indoor pe.

overmydeadbody · 15/04/2010 13:09

All the primary schools I know insist on plimsoles, not trainers, and they are nice and cheap.

mankyscotslass · 15/04/2010 13:12

OOps posted too early. I tend to get the trainers from Sport World, they have them cheaper for decent ones....Ds last pair of school trainers cos £8, they were plain black umbro velcro ones.

I will probably use them again for the other DS, as they hardly get worn.

SofaQueen · 15/04/2010 13:28

We need to supply both - plimsoles for regular pe and trainers for Games. Really annoying as it means I need ti purchase 2 pairs of trainers for him each time.

Goingspare · 15/04/2010 13:32

We keep pump/plimsolls in school; trainers are taken in once a week for outdoor games.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/04/2010 13:33

At DDs school its plimsolls for infants, but juniors must have white non-marking trainers plus football boots - DD has hardly used hers this year because I don't think they got on the field much this winter.

Only allowed trainers in yr6 at dcs primary because then it became harder to get the large sizes.

trainers for outdoor pe

plimsolls for indoor pe.

lottaluvin · 15/04/2010 14:11

Inside PE at the mo is bare feet for ds class so this would be outdoor PE a mix of hard ground and grass, are daps/pumps ok for this kind of impact?

I'm getting his feet measured for shoes tomorrow so may have a look in the new Brantano that's opened -are they any good?

I've seen some inexpensive trainers from Next too are they any good?

Recption, Year 1 7 Year 2 have to have black plimsolls only they don't do games at this level just athletics/aerobic typoe activity outdoors

Years 3-6 have plimsolls for dance/gym and trainers for outdoor games (Football, hockey, tennis etc).

CaptainUnderpants · 15/04/2010 14:37

I have to provide black plimsols and trainers for my two (junior school) I get the trainers from marks and spencer . Supposed to be either black or white but they get what they get !

Used to get black plimsols from woolies but alais no longer , also get them from M & S.

mummytime · 15/04/2010 14:41

My kids all have to have trainers not plimsolls. I used to buy cheap ones (Woolworths, Shoe express or JJB). When you get to secondary what really annoys me is football boots for a son who hates football. He only wears them once a week for at most 2 terms (never outside school).

Fizzylemonade · 15/04/2010 21:56

Cheap trainers £10 from Sports Direct or £15 from places like Next.

We have plimsolls/daps/pumps for indoor PE, and a separate kit for outdoor which includes the trainers.

I do know some parents who only bring in the trainers on the day they do sports but to be fair our school tends to get them outdoors quite a bit so they pop their trainers on with their uniform when they go and do things on the school field and see their veg patch etc (muddy)

Clary · 15/04/2010 22:49

Our infant school requests plimsolls for PE.

The juniors do indoor work barefoot (much better anyway) and need trainers for outdoors.

I usually go to a Clarks outlet etc. I agree tho they don't get a whole lotta wear.

lottaluvin · 18/04/2010 14:01

Thanks for your input guys, school rules do stipulate trainers - I had to read the uniform guide again. We are lucky that they allow these indoors and out, but for the moment they are barefeet indoors.

The plimsoles I saw were a bit soft don't really give the support for outdoors, don't want him going over on his ankle.

So I got DS measured in Clarks' yesterday tried on a few of the £28 trainers to see how easily he put on different styles - he has trouble with those bungee styles Clarks' seem to like. Then we went round the corner to our local sports shop and found a lovely pair of Kappa Trainers reduced from £29.99 to £9.99 - perfect! Although much grumbling from DS that he couldn't get the Marvel superheroes ones with flashing lights! (Just not sure they would go down too well with current teacher)

So..have a nice pair of barely used Clarks' Cica trainers in a size 10G going spare lol!

My DC's school specifically states that they do not consider plimsoles to be suitable. They do indoor PE barefoot, and have trainers for outdoor. I just buy them cheapy trainers from Tesco as they are worn so little.
