Levels ??? Year 1

Sorry - sure this has been asked before but can anyone shed some light on levels particularly where child should be at this point in year 1 roughly.

Had parents evening and was told DD struggles with maths but is working 'well' within Level 1. Is this well below average for this point in year 1???? (Summer born).

Thanks.

I think an average child should be 1c at the start of Y1 and 1a at the end. The levels are 1c 1b 1a 2c 2b 2a 3c 3b 3a etc and they should move 2 sub levels per year so 1c to 1a, 1a to 2 b etc.

You could ask what they're working on this year and try a bit at home at the weekends. I'm sure you could easily help your child to catch up if you're keen to help.

Practical experiences such as playing with cups of water in the bath, which cup holds the most water, or how many teaspoons full of water will it take to fill the egg cup?

Practise counting to ten, and get your child to draw her own numberline which she can use to help her with counting and adding and subtraction work.

A child in Y1 would be expected to be working well within level 1 (roughly 1a by the end of the year)

Your child sounds about right for her age. Children should complete an entire level (or 3 sub-levels) every 2 years. So she may do 2 sub-levels this year and 1 next year or the other way around.

If she is working well within level one then she may be around a 1b which means she could be a 1a by the end of the year. This would put her on target to be a 2b by the end of year 2,which is the expected level.

She may seem to struggle in comparison to other subjects. Is she particularly good at reading or writing?

Is there any website where those levels are interpreted? Ie so they actually mean something

Thanks all for your replies - very helpful. Unfortunately DD has struggled with school since she started with writing initially - now we seem to be worse at maths than anything else, reading pretty good from what I can tell and spelling pretty good and writing moving forward DD is on an IEP, is a summer born who really was not ready for school when it came.

Am I missing something with the maths, I do try and do as much as I can at home. DD can add and subtract up to 20, If i do +/- something = 10 etc she can do, can count backward and forwards to 20. Apparently hasn't grasped 'number bonds' her teacher says and not really sure what I should be doing as dont find school to forthcoming in this respect!!!!!

mel I would be looking for a child to know automatically that 1+9 and 4+6 and 0 +10 etc are ways of making 10 (number bonds) rather than needing to do the calculation if you see what I mean - it does help

bbc bitesize

bbc numeracy sites

Also playing shops with real or pretend money, playing connect 4, Top Trumps etc can just make them more number aware.
