Has anyone ever regretted deferring their child's entry into primary one (Scotland)

DD is 9 now and in primary 4 and it DEFINATELY was the best decision to make. The benefits of deferring far outweight the disadvantages. We even thought far enough ahead to high school and if we had sent her early she would have been the last in her class to take her driving test, one of the last to develope etc so we decided to give her the extra year as emotionally she would never have coped at school.

I think it is utterly crazy that you are forced to send a premature child to school at 4, even a none premature child at 4 if you think they are not ready for school. There was a thread on here recently about a child being made to go to school at 4 when he had developmental delays as well which was madness as another year at nursery would have benefitted him greatly.

I wonder where the law stands on this, if you refused to send you child to school until they were 5 would you be prosecuted? I suppose unlike the Scottish system if you defer you would lose your nursery place.

Christiana - I know it sounds mad but after realising that DD2 only gets 1 and 1/3 years at nursery when other children get 2 and will go to school at 4 1/2, we made the decision to hold off TTC#3 so they would at least have a March birthday but of course these things never go to plan and we lost our March baby and have a July one instead. The next one is due in May as well.

Just thought I'd let you know that Bliss, the premature and sick baby charity, are doing a survey on entering your premature-born child into primary school. They want anyone whose had a premature baby to take part, whether they agree with the current School Admissions Code or not and whether they wanted to delay their child's entry to school or not. You can get more info and take part here.

They campaign for more flexibility around premature born children starting school and will be using the survey as evidence in their campaigning work.
