Spelling mistakes - careless

Ds being in Yr 3, does make quite a few spelling mistakes. Not that he doesn't know them - if I ask him he will say the correct one. For eg. 70% of time, everything is everyting.. what becomes wat.. sometimes i is missing, sometimes a .. though when I ask him he knows.

I'm quite puzzled. Is that ok? I've tried to work with him a lot of times, and will tell him to say in his head while writing. But it still happens
Not sure what to do.. any help anyone? Is this something to worry about?

Same as my dd who is in y4. She is in such a rush to finish her work she tends to make really simple mistakes. No answers I am afraid.

I always ask my children to edit their work and they have a prompt strip to show what they are checking so first time is for sense/logical sentences then it might be capital letters- then re read and check punctuation - then re read and check spellings -which usually jump out at them by now

I've tried to make him re-read but he still misses it. If I point it out to him he will say in an instant what the mistake is.

Proofeading your own work is very difficult, even for adults, because you see what you intended to write, not what you actually wrote!

Try getting him to sound out a few words in the vicinity of (and including) the 'wrong' one and see if he can spot his mistakes that way before you resort to pointing them out to him. Tell him to look at it as if it is someone else's work which he has to mark.

He probably won't like doing it!

Thanks, will try that.

Use a coloured pen and at the end of each row of writing write how many spelling mistakes are in the row eg with a red pen write 1,2,0, with a different colour write p if there is a puntutation mistake.

Then let him look at his work and see how many of the mistakes he can find.By doing this he has will focus more to find the mistakes.

Unfortuately just re-reading several times with no focus makes all the mistakes invisible, even to adults (as maiseD said)I do this with the children in my TEFL lessons and it seems to help.

If it's a short piece of writing, he could read it backwards. Once the words are out of context, he should see the mistakes more clearly.
