Are there some good ways of learning number bonds? DS in yr1 and want to support him in this.

Thanks a lot!

DD learnt using a little rhyme I found on MN, which a MNetter had made up. Can kind of be sung to tune of Row Row Row your boat.

1 and 9 are number bonds
2 and 8 are friends
3 and 7
4 and 6
5 and 5 are twins

Worked for DD as she loves singing She is 7 and in Y3 now and still remembers it from em teaching her it back in reception.

There are a couple of brilliant number bond games on Ict games - one is Save the Whale, and there's another two I think.

My dd2 learned the same song as Hula's dd (I learned it from mn too )

She learned it quickly and easily and taught the song to her Y1 teacher who thought it was brill!

A number bond rainbow is a good visual reminder for 1-10

www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/numberbond.swf has good games for number bonds 1-5, 1-10 and 1-100.

These look good! My dd really struggles with the concept of number bonds - and cannot work out that eg. 4 + 6 is teh same as 6 + 4 so tehse will really help.

MathsMadMummy · 23/03/2010 13:59

can't remember where, but I saw a video of a school thing and noticed in the background they had 'number bond butterflies' - e.g. 7 on one wing, 3 on the other.
maybe you could make one for each bond and write 10 on the body for each one or something.

that number twins game is great!

Thanks very much to Hulababy and Nannynick! A combination of teh Numberbond song and the rainbow means that dd now has a fair idea of her bonds (not memorised yet - will take a while!) and was away to school this morning with a picture of teh rainbow ready to sing the song to the TA who does her 1 to 1! Thanks again!

Hmm at MNer making it up, my DS who is now 15 learned something very similar to the same tune when he was in infants

My children learnt theirs in about two days by playing the patience game 'pyramid'.

Take all the face cards and jokers out of the pack. Make a six row pyramid - 1 card on the first row, two on the second etc.

Then you have your face-down 'stock' pile. You can remove the 10s, and pairs of cards that add up to 10, but only if they're accessible (ie. no card on top of them). Once you've got rid of all the pairs/10s you can, you start turning over cards in your stock pile, and with them start a new face-up discard pile. You can then make the pairs up from the pyramid and the top card in your discard pile.

See how much of the pyramid you can get rid of.

that sounds fun!

Kathsunn · 25/03/2010 10:45

That pyramid game sounds very good! I am going to try it this weekend with ds(y1). He loves games and he probably won't even know he's learning something. Your a very clever waitress Mrs Wobble!

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 25/03/2010 12:32

I'm not that clever! It's from a book called Games for Math by Peggy Kaye.
