Number lines?

Does anyone know if they still use number lines to teach basic maths in schools? DD (reception) has become very interested in adding and subtracting. I've showed her a number line and she caught on to the concept straight away, and I'm just wondering if this is still the method for teaching?

Thanks in advance

Yes, they do. At our school it forms the basis of addition and subtraction in KS1. (Subtract from right to left though!!)

Saying that - make sure they do in your daughter's school. Go and ask the KS1 leader. Different schools have different policies for teaching maths.

We all tend to refer to the Standards sites for literacy and maths though, and numberlines are a fairly basic element. We use blank ones a lot for counting on and back in different steps further up the school

DS uses one.

We use them up to and including year 6 for all 4 number operations ( although we do use other methods too!)

What's a number line?! DD is learning adding/subtracting at the moment and seems really interested in it. We've just been using fingers/objects to help her with it as she can't do it in her head yet.

Thanks everyone - she was getting very frustrated only being able to add numbers that equal 10 or less (if only we had more than 10 fingers )

Thank you EasterBunny - will check with the school just in case.
