Is EYFS preschool/nursery AND reception?

Or is reception KS1? Am confrugled!!!

I have my ds1's levels in front of me, well, what I think are his levels, and just wanted to know a little more about them.

Is it just that they progress overall, or that at the end of reception they are meant to be at 9, or have reached a certain level, or do they have to reach 9 by the end of preschool/nursery and then go on a new sheet for reception?

I am from a totally different education system and as we are changing schools (due to house relocation, not school issues) I just wanted to know how he was going before we meet with the head of his possible (state) school on Tuesday.

If I posted the levels would it make more sense? Could someone tell me if he is going ok?

Sorry for all the questions, I just have no idea at all

Thanks ever so much scooby makes me feel a little less anxious, I guess I worry because I am dyslexic/dyspraxic and did not find out get help till much later and want to spare my DD the agony if poss. Hope you don't mind me asking what sort of evidence is needed should I see my DDs teacher? I would be a little embarrassed as parents evening was not that long ago and given you poor teachers have only 5 minutes to tell us everything I did not think to ask questions.

Oh believe me, my DD starts in reception this year and i'd be worried too if I didn't have inside information!!

I'm sure your teacher would be quite happy to speak with you about your concerns so don't feel embarrassed. I always tell parents when they leave consultations that they know my door is always open. I know that when I'm on that side of the table (with older DC) I can never remember the important stuff I wanted to ask!

Some of the KUW scales have 2 or 3 components. For example: PP6 is "Finds out about past and present events in own life, and in those of family members and other people s/he knows. Begins to know about own culture and beliefs and those of other people." There are a lot of ands there! Whereas PP6 for numbers for labels and counting is "counts reliably up to 10 everyday objects". Much easier!!!

The teacher will collect evidence througout the year in the form of post it notes, photographs, notes made during adult led group work.... If you think that they've missed something share it! It is part of the EYFS that their achievements outside school are recognised too. I encourage my parents to contribute post it notes to the wall. (It's only happened once though!)

HTH. Any other questions, let me know. I'll by happy to answer if I can.

Thanks Scooby, one last question do the levels have to be achieved in order, your info really has helped!

? In the Autumn term record children?s on-entry to Reception data. This should be completed as soon as a teacher is reasonably confident children are settled.
? In Spring term assess and enter data around February half-term. At this stage, in some strands, many children will not necessarily have made any recordable progress since the Autumn term. Observations could show good progress towards points 4 to 8 without a child having actually fully achieved any of them.
? In Summer term the end of the year assessments need to be completed by the end of June and the data submitted to the Local Authority.

QCDA has published guidance regarding scale points 1 ? 3. This is accessible on the internet at: testsandexams.qcda.gov.uk/19904.aspx

The main point to note is that QCDA are now clear that points 1 to 3 are indicative of a developmental level children are working at and children who have not achieved these statements will not be ready to achieve statements linked to the early learning goals. This applies to all points 4 to 8 including some like NLC 4 (Say number names in order) and CD 4 (Sings simple songs from memory) which seem easily possible for a younger child to achieve. There will be some exceptions to this , mainly children with very specific special needs, but the advice from QCDA is that these will be very few.
