Y4 homework: what are 'shape nets'?

I was fondly imagining a nice hanging net filled with prettily coloured shapes, like you'd get in ELC or Ikea - but then I remembered DS2 was nearly 9, not 4....

So I am thinking they're 3D shapes laid out in 2D?

I'm aware DS1 has got a lot of this stuff in his upcoming Y6 SATS where they have to tick which 2D pattern makes a given pictured 3D shape so I think I'm right- but am I?!

Yes you're right! When dd1 came home and said she had to make a net for a cube I thought she meant something like a dinky little shrimping net to hold dice or something. Hadn't twigged it was for maths!

Yes, as mentioned above, if you were to lay the 3D objects out in 2D that would be the shape net. If you could make the shape net out of paper, you would be able to fold it to make it into the 3D shape.

I'm curious. What does year 4 do with these shapes that they didn't do in year 2?

in my OU course materials I got some nets for dodecahedrons and suchlike
