Yr 1 Key number facts

Hi, At my parent/ teacher evening last week I was told to help build my DS's knowledge of key number facts to help him solve problems. I didn't know what they were so the teacher said "double or sums of 10,that sort of thing, you know". I'm still none the wiser! Does anyone have a list of Yr 1 number facts that I can help my son get to grips with; or know where I might find one?

Also, the teacher mentioned patterns in numbers. What does that mean?

I'm a maths thicko, I know!

Try counting up in 2s, 5s, 10s, up to 100.
Then try picking a number eg, 15 and getting ds to come up with sums to make that number.

HI Squashpie, I have DD in year 1 as well. At parents evening teacher was discussing maths and said they are working on the following

Ways of getting to 10 (2+8)

Times tables (only 1,2,3 I think)

Looking at taking away (they pretend to buy things in a shop)

Hope this is a bit more help

Thanks for those suggestions. The way the teacher was talking I assumed there was a sort of standard list of "key number facts" that all kids should cover in their infant, or certainly year 1, years. Is that the case and, if so, anyone know where I find them, so I know what I should be covering? Many thanks!

Hia

Things most children will know by END of year 1 are (please correct me if I a wrong or I have mised anything) :

Count in 2s
Count in 10s
Know number bonds to 10 (ie all numbers that add up to 10)
Count back wards from 20
Count 20 random objects
Be able to ad or subtract 1 from any given number under 20

Thanks Tikkapots that's really helpful. Is there a curriculum list which specifies what kids should cover in the different areas of the curriculum, eg whcih specific areas in punctuation for year 2 year 3 etc, and then for maths etc?

You can go onto the Uk national curriculum government website.
Each stage is listed by subject.
Its a massive download and take ages to read through, hard going but well worthwhile.

I also sympathise re number bonds/number facts ( why the cant just say numbers that add up to 5 or 10 etc)
I was told off for calling them Sums instead of number sentences!
For Number Bonds:
The Y1 teacher taught to use a triangle and write in 2 numbers ie for a number bond to 10:
Write 10 at the top and 4 in a corner.
get your child to complete the missing number
ie 6
get your child to understand you can add a + sign or a minus sign to either side of the triangle to make the sum of 10

6+4 +10 or reverse 10-4=6
the idea is to be able to rapid recall all of these in Y2 without thinking.

My daughters class mates enrolled in Kumon classes which is repetition by page of all the number bonds done to a timer.
It looks crazy,
They were the ones who sailed through year 2 and 3. I couldnt see the sense in rote learning these "bonds" but I wish id done it with DD in Yr 1.

THK, Thanks so much for all that. I shall look at the website now. The triangle sounds an excellent idea. Everyone I know (I'm exaggerating but it's how I feel!) seems to be doing kumon. I kinda think, my god, DS is only 6 but then I think, it's a bit like timestables, once they've got those bonds firmly in their brain, things speed up a bit.

Anyway, will go through the government website now and try and casually drop number bonds etc into everyday conversation in the hope he's listening!!

Just found the website - it's brilliant, isn't it. Now I know exactly what's supposed to be covered. Also makes me realise what a long journey we have in front of us ks 1, 2, 3, 4 .... blimey ....

Another Y1 dd here - am having to re-learn all my terminology as I go along

Recently bought 'Maths for Mums and Dads', which is clear, fun, and reassuring...recommend it for anyone as insecure about being able to support their LO through primary maths as I am!

You can also look at parentsintouch.com which Ive found helpful for explaining the terminology and providing worksheets.
I still so wish I had drilled Dd on the number bonds in Y1 - but i didnt really grasp what it was about until or think it would be so important. in Y2 doing x tables consciously drilled it rote fashion and can see the benfit.
