How involved do you get in your children's primary school?

Just asking 'cos I've had two people now discuss the reading books with me in the playground, discussing what scheme the school is using, whether there is too much repetition of words etc and I have to admit I haven't a clue what they're going on about. Didn't even realise there were different schemes, I just presumed things had moved on since the Peter and Jane of the 70's and that the books were written by someone who knew something about children's learning. Honestly the most I could tell you about my dd1's reading book this week is that it's about helicopters, and to be honest was a bit dull. Do other parents know this stuff?
Also, one parent was complaining that more parents weren't going in to discuss the ofsted report. Now I admit it wasn't great, but I really didn't expect it to be. There were a couple of things but I didn't feel the need to go and discuss them. Would parents normally go and discuss them?

its normal for schools to offer a meeting to discuss any issues post ofsted - especially if the report wasnt so great. Is this parent on the PTA? she sounds like she is involved to be worrying about whether other people are going to a meeting.

if you are happy with your son's reading book (as much as you can be with dull readin schemes) then thats fine. Parents moaning in the playground about what books the school has bought is unlikely to change anything.

Thank you, I thought maybe it was just me. She is on the PTA and I think her whole live is wrapped up in the school, whereas I barely remember I have kids once I've dropped them off in the morning.

Mine are in reception and year 2. I think the school does a good job with reading so I pretty much leave it to them in confidence. Of course we read at home too. But we just read whatever the kids fancy. Now, ehen it comes to maths, I am the resident hawk. The school is not in my opinion up to par on this subject and so we talk about math all the time. In fact, i have an appointment with DD's teacher on Friday to discuss her progress in math -- which is good but I feel could be better if I had a better understanding of what they do in school so I have asked for this meeting. I used to be very involved with PTA and related events. But I also work full time and I think I just burned out. So am backing off now.
