Cursive Script - DS struggling with forming letters - any tips?

Hi,

DS's [5.6] teacher has just pulled me to one side at drop off and said that DS's ability to form characters is not commensurate with the effort he puts in to doing it and had I had his eyes tested. Answer is yes, and he has just had a school medical that didn't mention anything.

She said that he tries very hard and has so much to give, but that he isn't forming the letters as well as he should be by now. Which is weird, as we practice at home and I thought he was doing rather well with them! Obviously I am not a teacher, and have no idea how well he should be able to do it at this stage..

They teach cursive script and she did say this threw some children..

Just wondered if I should be worried...intend to practice a bit more with him, bit don't want him to get sick to death of practicing letters when he is so tired after school, he's only half way through recpetion after all...

Thanks,

Bloss

Hello
why don't you try and make the practice a bit of fun - let him spray some shaving foam on the covered kitchen table and let him practice letter formations in that.

Another idea is to spread paint on paper and let him use his fingers to form letters - this can also be done by giving him a big paintbrush to write with.

In summer give him a big paintbrush, fill a bucket with water and let him have a go at writing letters outside.

You could also go onto the sparklebox website and download some of their resources.

Good luck - and try and make it fun.
