Spelling again . . . any good resources

DD (year 3) is struggling with her spelling - particularly a problem because she hates getting things wrong, and so it makes her very reluctant to write anything at all.

Last year her teacher definitely saw her writing as a problem, and in fact she had a 'plan' (IEP?) to help her improve, which definitely helped her to the point that she can now generally spell CVC and CCVC words (previously she didn't have a clue where to start).

This year when we asked at parents' evening (mid October) her teacher felt that everything was ok, but it really feels now as if she's a bit 'stuck' and could do with a bit more help.

I'm going to make an appointment to speak to her teacher again, but was also wondering if anyone could suggest any particularly good websites or workbooks that might help. Any rules that dd can cling on to seem to help her particularly, if nothing else they encourage her to write something, which is really all she often needs to do!

I bought a fab book the other day called "Spelling Essentials - Handbook of English spelling rules and definitions" by Elizabeth Tucker. We're in Oz so I'm not sure if it's available in the UK but the publisher's website is www.ricpublications.com.au I struggle to explain spelling rules; like most people I know what it should be but not always why so books like this are really helpful.

Thank you very much for all the recommendations - I'll get to Smiths & have a look! Expect they'll have the S&S ones too.

The rules book sounds really useful too, dd is very much the sort of person who likes to know WHY things should be as they are, fair enough, but its not always very obvious with English

It'd be great to have any recommendations from your tutor friend, too Samanthar.

I think part of the problem is that sometimes the way we say things is not 'proper', even if the word is theoretically fairly phonetic - dd wrote 'kichin' for 'kitchen' in her last homework, which is probably exactly what we say . . .

Anyway, phonetic spelling is a great improvement for her over last year, when she was totally baffled by it all.
