I had to chuckle this morning at school on seeing some children dressed up for World book day as Scooby Doo, Ben 10, Spongebob and The Stig.

We had very strict instructions that it couldn't be a film or cartoon character ONLY a book.

Mine too. And was I write to tell DS that Star Wars wassn't a book? He has some easy read SW books but they came after film didn't they??

DrNortherner · 04/03/2010 14:44

Oh does it really matter?

Fimblehobbs · 04/03/2010 14:51

There are books with all those characters in. In fact the book catalogue school sent home with their £1 WBD token includes Ben 10 and Dr Who at least.

I thought we were meant to encourage children to read all sorts of books. Bit more interesting than going as Biff and Chip surely?!

GypsyMoth · 04/03/2010 15:08

my ds wanted to go as 'boy in blue striped pyjamas' but teacher said no,inappropriate! well maybe, maybe not,....year 4's have just had ww2 day complete with gas mask boxes....

seems it has to only be certain types of books to keep the school happy!! be a bit different and no,not acceptable!

southeastastra · 04/03/2010 15:09

snobtastic thread

BadGardener · 04/03/2010 15:59

Not very nice of OP to sneer at what other parents have done. For parents who don't have a house full of books it is actually a bit of a faff to find something suitable.
At our school they have to bring the book in - so there were several Scooby Doos but they had got hold of books, which is the whole point surely?

Hulababy · 04/03/2010 16:18

As far as I am aware you can get books of ALL of the characters in the OP.

Why the issue?

Surly the only thing that matters is that the children are joining in and having a good time, and so long as the children are reading something, does it matter what? IMO ANY reading is better than none.

* If reading Ben 10 books gets a child interested in books surely it is a good thing?

smee · 04/03/2010 16:52

Blimey am amazed at all the rules and vetos. Surely anything that gets a child to read is good - comics included.

lulu2 · 04/03/2010 19:03

who says i was sneering?

Ours had to be a Roald Dahl character, this is the first year they have been specific. A couple of Mums forgot and the kids looked so upset

DrNortherner · 04/03/2010 21:43

lulu yuo said you had to chuckle - why did you chuckle then?

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 04/03/2010 22:02

Children in my class were worrying about this, particularly the boys. I told them that for every film there is always a book and also showed them a selection of fottball themed stories.

They are just children and it is meant to be fun, not another thing to put pressure on children/parents.

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 04/03/2010 22:02

or even football lol

mii · 04/03/2010 22:05

95% of the girls were princesses

most of the boys were just wearing jeans and a t-shirt
