School journey / residential trips for primary school children.

Just curious really. Our state primary does one school journey for year 6 towards the end of the summer term. It is not seen as a field trip, much more as a holiday to celebrate the end of primary. All children go and the PTA scoop up any children whose parents cannot afford it. We go to the isle of Wight ( so abroad in many eyes!). I do know that some schools do many more trips, do you?

I can still remember my school journey. I loved it. Golden days.

My DDs school do residentials in yr2, yr4 and yr6, the yr2 trip for one night and the others for 2 nights; yr6 is more of a holiday as you say about your school, but the others are linked to the curriculum and are hugely anticipated and enjoyed by the children.

Wow - my DD would have loved that but I think in Year 2 our DS would have struggled, he didn't manage a sleepover until junior age, but then it is different on a school trip.

Our primary goes in Y4, 4 nights, in Essex (we're in London) then again in Y6 after SATs, to France.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/03/2010 22:10

Maybe our school is unusual then in only doing one trip. I quite like it, and they look forward to it for their entire primary career.

....and posey ... yours really DO go abroad wow!

Ours used to go to France in yr6, then they switched it to year 5.

Now, they have scrapped the france idea alltogether, and pupils now go on a residential trip to oxford at the start of year 6.

I think year 2 is too young to go on a residential trip.

Our school do a 3-day two night trip to about an hour away in Year five, and then a 5-day four night trip to Wales (about six hours from here) at the end of Year 6.

Ours do one night away (about 2 hours from school) in Y3, then 2 nights in Y4,5,6. They are typical "outdoors adventure" type places.

DS2 (11) HATES sleeping away from home and they are a real trial for him. DH went the first year - parents can volunteer to help - but last year it wasn't possible so he had to go on his own. His year group are off next week and he is tearful every night already! I would love not to send him, which is an option, but I kind of feel that he needs to learn he can't opt out of everything difficult in life

Ours do two nights in y2 (ds didn;t go), and a week in y4 and y6...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/03/2010 07:06

SunnyD - my friend didn't send her oldest DS when he was in primary because he just wasn't ready. He is now 18, and preparing to go off to Uni, and happily being independent!

My Ds's first experience was at cub camp for one night, but he was 8, and I think they were so exhausted they didn't so much sleep, more pass out!

My dd's school start residential trips in Y4. She went for four nights to a chalet thing in Southern Switzerland and adored it. She is very cross that we are leaving Switzerland so she won't be going to the cheese and chocolate factories in Y5.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/03/2010 08:01

kreecher - I can understand where she's coming from on the chocolate front at least

DCs do one trip in Year 5.

titchy · 04/03/2010 09:14

Ours do a week in Yr 4, a week in Yr 5 and a week in yr 6. They love it!

Just wished they timed it so they were all away at once and we'd have a child-free week!

Portofino · 04/03/2010 09:50

Kreecher, from Belgium though she will get to go skiing for 10 days/2 weeks in year 6.

They also do a week at the seaside in Year 3.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/03/2010 11:20

I am not sure if she will portofino, she is going to attend an International school. If she does the skiing she'll be thrilled. She is bloody good at it.
