Had parents evening today and DD1 doing well on phonics/writing/and starting to read however her teacher has concerns over numeracy (we had noticed that she has struggled with basic numbers counting from 1 to 20 etc) but he would like us to help her confidently know her number sequence and suggested 5 minute quiz about number sequence like what comes before 7 what comes after 10 etc) does nayone have any other ideas what we can do to help her remember number sequences?

Lots and lots of counting - which is pretty easy to squeeze into a normal day and you don't necessarily have to make special time for it. Count steps walking somewhere, spot numbers on house doors, count apples into bags when shopping...etc. Try to make it seem as though you need her help - don't heap the pressure on.

Also - any board games that involve counting on (snakes and ladders...etc) I actually find that really helpful because it helps them get to grips with numberlines later on.

Also - number fridge magnets - you could challenge her to order them from time to time.

How is her counting in general? Can she reliably count a selection of items? Does she know to give one number to each item?

She needs to be secure with counting before you can throw in the more complicated number before / number after dimension.

Sorry if that is all extremely obvious!

I can't think which ones but I imagine Orchard Toys would have some good games for this.

Snakes and ladders?

Ds1 has a fun Orchard Toys game (Spotty Dog Game?) that involves counting - 1 to 6 to play the basic game, but up to 20 plus in the adding up scores at the end bit. He loves it, but is a bit younger than your dd (so I don't know if she'd think it too babyish).

Ds likes those Orchard Toys games, particularly the Ladybirds one. He also likes this. He likes doing the number quiz on it.

Do you have a big clock somewhere prominent in your house? We have one by the kitchen table and ds1 loves to count with it and talk about numbers and the time generally when eating (or not eating as the case may be).

this is a good visual and physical aid

wow went off to have a bath whilst dinner cooking and loads of replies, generally counting to 15 fine but once past 15 she gets very muddled and we have 61 (16) then 18 maybe then 20 etc plus her classic is 20+10 (21!) she can count objects (as in if we are baking and I ask for 3 eggs she'll get 3 eggs from bowl so can place the idea od 1 object being 1 iygwim

She did get disney snakes and ladders for Xmas but very small numbers and confusing snake pictures so will try to find a basic clear version

Love the clock idea (know she'll love that) so will pop into town tomorrow as am sure wilkinsons will have a cheapish one and am off to look at all the links now thanks again really helpfuk
