Was this a SAT test? (Y2)

Dd came home today and said she got 19 out of 26 in her maths test today. She hasn't had a test before like this so is it a SATS test or a practise SATS?

She's in the middle group for numeracy. Would this be an average kind of score?

violet SATs tests are usually done in the summer term, May/June time. That was probably a practice.
I don't think anyone could tell you what would be the average kind of score for the test... you need to go to speak to the teacher. There isn't a set mark like you need to get 80% or more to get top grades, it will vary depending on the questions in each test.
Find out if the school is doing a parents night about SATS, we did this in the school I worked in, to explain to parents about SATs and what they could do to help prepare.

Thanks for that. I thought it might be a practice paper.

I'm pretty sure the school don't do a parents evening on SATS as I have friends whose kids have gone through the whole business in previous years and haven't had it explained to them by the school. Maybe I'll have a chat to the teacher after half term to get an idea of when they do it / if I should do anything to help dd prepare for it.

Thanks again!

Last week, both ds2(y5) and dd(y2) came home saying they'd done "that thing where you show how good you are at work all by yourself and you're not allowed to show anyone else your answers" (dd's explanation)

They did them for literacy and numeracy (I think) but I'm assuming it's part of ongoing teacher assessment - neither of them seemed at all bothered by it. I've no idea what an average maths score is, but ds2 (on meaningless G&T register for maths) routinely gets 100% as do a couple of other kids in his class, so I think the general marks are usually quite high. Have you asked her teacher?

violetbloom · 13/02/2010 22:44

Well I'd expect a G&T kid to get 100% to be honest but dd's not in that category. As I said, she's absolutely average for maths, every year she's at the point where she's meant to be for her age which is fine by me and dp - neither of us are good with numbers.

I was just curious if what dd got for her maths test was a kind of average score. I don't imagine 100% is average.

100% is not average. Like I said, the papers are graded according to the individual questions. The questions are marked and then the marks added up, then teacher looks at the accompanying stuff and assigns a level, 1, 2c, 2b etc...
I would say for an average year 2, you would expect level 2.
It's not as simple as saying you got 59% etc.. on the bumpf it will say
score 12-15 level 1a
score 15-20 level 2c
or whatever...
To get an idea of how she's doing, ask the teacher for a quick chat. I would recommend not getting to hung up about it though. As long as she is happy and keeping up with the others in the class, I reckon that is fine

Mine do maths tests every week, one on tables and +/- which takes about 10 minutes, one with 15 more general questions that takes about 20 mins. I also differentiate to three levels, so 19/26 wouldn't tell you much about peer average, just if they improved against their previous scores at a similar level.
So it depends what the test content was.
talk to her teacher rather than getting hung up on scores.
