How much homework for Yr1?

I am a little concerned at the lack of homeowrk my DS has. In Reception he used to bring home all sorts of bits of homework, most noticably writing practice (which he definately needed!).

He is now in year one and brings home next to nothing. He has his reading book which he returns everyday (but he is a great reader so not very challenging)and has maybe five spelling words to learn every 3-4 weeks, when he gets the new words I rarely have to teach him how to spell them as they are quite basic and he spells them without pausing! Other than this he gets nothing.

My nephews are in reception and yr2 at another school and get loads of homework and my friends DD in Yr 1 at another school gets loads too.

I am worried, should I be? Parents evening is coming up, should I question this?

Just be thankful that you do not have a DC at the school where they get "loads of homework" in reception.

IMO homework in infants is unnecessary, beyond reading book. That and some spellings (where I agree with Hula!) is basically all DS2 has. Sometimes they are asked to research a particular topic - but then it's not homework task, it's a fun different thing!

Seriously, why would you be worried? It's true what they say, isn't it, homework is for the parents.

Meant to say, DS2 is in yr 2.

seeker - exactly.

My ds2 has serious worry issues about homework & everything else under the sun. We've just spoken to school and the sn/pastoral care teacher had a long chat with ds2 and then us. She said that homework is totally pointless and brought in because parents were asking for it - god knows why!? Headteacher hates it too!

He loves to read and that's great.

As for varying in the area, well it does here too. I know one school that has masses from reception - quite ridiculous. Yet, dd1 in her school has nothing in yr1.

DS in year 1 - gets 5 spellings a week for test on Friday, new book most nights (ORT) and literacy/maths at weekend.

I also think Children should be homework free until in Juniors.

DS also in year 1 gets:

A book which he has for 2 nights then returns, new spellings every Monday with a test the following Monday, a maths worksheet once a week.

This is very manageable for him.

Interesting, this is going on in another thread edinburghnews.scotsman.com/susan-morrison/Susan-Morrison-Meeting-gobbledegook-really.6046723.jp

Dd1, brings home a reading book (which gets exchanged when we have completed it, so once or trice a week) and spellings once a week.

I would be happy for her not to have any homework tbh as she's tired enough when she gets home and really doesn't want to sit down and do spellings when she gets home. School is for learning, home is for playing and relaxing.

DorkTurnspit · 10/02/2010 17:32

agree with seeker reading and reading and reading at home, not just the school books, is all they need apart from rest.

Interesting article Cygnet, if you think about it in those terms it makes sense not to do homework!!

So I guess the concensus is don't raise the matter withthe teacher. Ok I will leave it and relax about the homework.

My dd get a reading book changed 3 times a week. 10 spellings per week. (since Ot Half term) She also has one project per term. Eg poster, scrap book on topic etc. Think she had a similar amount in reception.
