Another one on reading books - Sorry

Hi
My ds is in Reception. His school uses ORT as the basis for reading, but has other schemes at the same level.

My ds is on stage 1+. He started on this stage the first week of the school year and has been on this ever since. He brings home 4 books a week, and reads another 6 books a week to his teacher.

He was asked this term, whether he would like to try a slightly harder book (i.e. go on to stage 2) he said no. Teacher has left it as that, and has said she'll wait for him to want to move on.

What's other people's opinion on this?

Personally I think the teacher should not point out that it is the next level book, and give it to him to read, and maybe let him know afterwards, i.e. well done, that's the next level, or maybe not point it out at all. Is it best to let the child coast on their own accord, or is it not coasting at this age?

Sorry for the long post.

First of all, I am super impressed that he reads a massive 6 books a week to his teacher!

I don't think it is coasting at this age. I dare say he will ask to try the harder ones within a fortnight.

So was I, this was something I was only aware of this term, when ds commented that he'd 'only' got to read 4 books that week, as they were busy settling in after the holidays!! Then made a passing comment to teacher, and was told that yes, he reads 2 books every time with her, as they take no time at all.

I just think he does like the easy street in life, so I think if left to him he'll keep it simple, and where there's enough books of different stories, he's happy just doing that.

It sounds like he's a confident reader at the stage he's on and is enjoying being bale to read the level 1+ books. I'm surprised he's stil on them if he's been reading 10 a week as there aren't actually that many books available at that level! If he's happy there I can see why his teacher hasn't pushed him any further, there's nothing more disheartening for a child to be reading confidently and fluently, be moved up a level and suddenly find they are struggling. His teacher will be doing lots of things other than reading books in preparation for him to make a smooth move onto the next level, often it's better for children to foster a love of reading and not struggle than to race through the levels

ktee1 the school supplement the ORT with lots of different reading schemes, plus books that aren't part of a particular reading scheme but are at that level.

To be honest I thought he'd of run out of books, occassionally we've had a book that we've had previously, but not often, but new ones keep coming home.

I see what your saying about confidence, and every night he does his books and will tell me if I've not done them yet, so he enjoys doing it and doesn't seem bored.

I think if he's happy with what he is reading then its fine. However maybe ask the teacher to put on level 2 book in the bag to see how he gets on with it?
