How often are reading books normally changed in year 1?

DD changes books three times a week. She also reads to her teacher once a week and if it isn't finished, it get sent home. So she has three, sometimes four books a week.

Ds reads to his teacher mon/wed/fri and the book is changed then.

He gets a book to look at (he reads it though) everyday of his choice.

We do lots of other reading though so don't rely on the school.

amidaiwish · 30/01/2010 19:56

depends on the book/how much the parents/children do each night ime.

sometimes DD finishes a book a night and it is changed daily. (except thursday, no reading book sent home).

other times we are busy, she is tired, we just do a few pages and then it might take a week for us to get through the book (she is a free reader so the books can get v long now).

Books changed twice a week
read to a teacher/helper twice a week

ruhavingalarf · 30/01/2010 20:09

Started off twice a week

Upped to daily after chat at parents evening ( Nov ), teacher said DS could cope with it. Sometimes we don't get to do the whole book in a night so leave the reading record blank and get it again the next day. He is a bit grrrr if this happens tho.

If you think it should be changed more freq, speak to the teacher.

My Y1 daughter gets 2 books home a week and reads twice a week in school - to a helper or to the teacher.

misshardbroom · 31/01/2010 08:34

There's supposed to be 2 'changing days' each week on Mon & Thurs. If DD has finished her book, then she changes it, but if not, she doesn't.

However, I say 'supposed', because sometimes the teacher changes them on different days, which does drive me slightly mental when DD has tried hard and finished a book only to find she's missed her opportunity to change it and then can't change it until the following week.

I wish they'd just let them change it whenever they need to rather than be tied to a specific day.

redskyatnight · 31/01/2010 10:39

Parents/child responsible for changing books so can change as frequently as we like.

thedollshouse · 31/01/2010 10:44

Usually about 3 times a week but recently it only seems to be about once a week. I'm not concerned that they aren't changing them as we have plenty of books at home that ds can read, what does worry me is this suggests that they aren't actually reading to anyone at school. The books that they bring home are not challenging enough, I have made commented on his reading record that he needs harder books. It is difficult to know how far to push it as I don't want to appear like a pushy parent!

thedollshouse · 31/01/2010 10:45

Apologies for all the typos!

thirdname · 31/01/2010 10:47

wow, once every week if lucky, may also be once every other week.

aristocat · 31/01/2010 10:53

in my DCs school the children in yr 1 are listened to at least 3 times a week (teacher,TA,parent helper).
i think this is good.

i listen to a year 2/1 class every week and theres quite a range of reading ability. depending on the level each book must be read at home and at school before a different one is given.

SeaTrek · 31/01/2010 10:56

Same as redskyatnight - children change books every day or whenever they have finished their book. They can bring more than one home, too.

amidaiwish · 31/01/2010 13:29

in DDs class they read to the teacher at least once a week and on 3 other days to either the TA/parent helper. so 4x week.

thedollshouse - i don't think making an observation that the books are not challenging him is being pushy. they need your feedback. i only did this in DDs reading book once and the teacher heard her read and jumped her up a level and the next week another level again. Sometimes they need it bringing to their attention (no fault of theirs, they have 30 kids to monitor).

Hulababy · 31/01/2010 20:40

At DD's school in R to Y2 the teacher change the child's book when they have completed it. This is initially daily, with the first books, and less often once reading longer books. They read at school and at home daily.

In the Y1 class I work in it is down to parents and child to change books as and when they want to. The books are in ability coloured boxes in the classroom. For some this is daily, for others rarely. TA and teacher rarely involved; they deal with guided reading in class instead. The guided reading takes place once a week in groups. As a TA I do check the reading diaries every so often and will try to encourage those who are reluctant to take books.

GaGaOohLaLa · 31/01/2010 20:44

Daily. She reads to the teacher/TA four times a week too.

EVye · 31/01/2010 21:24

2 books once a week.

CurtainTwitcher · 04/02/2010 19:44

Ds has his changed once a week. Was a bit miffed as he was reading all the book in 5mins with no effort. However this week he has come home with a longer book and 14 comprehension questions which possibly will take a an hour or so at the weekend.
