I forgot to mention that I'm looking for that perfect combo for my DD. There are so many schools. I looked at Pembridge, Hill House, St. Nick's...

From the thread, Faulkner H seems to be popular.

It's soooo interesting to find this thread! We loved FH too and were very disappointed when DD was placed on the waiting list after the Jan 2010 assessment but got a firm offer from Glendower. Our heads wanted Glendower (for the exceptional academics and elitism but our hearts wanted FH for the (apparently) jollier atmosphere and hands on headmistress. We chose Glendower over Eaton House in the end. To speak for Glendower, it appears to be very collegiate and so nurturing. Having met more of the staff at Glendower and other parents this week I must say we are now 100% happy with our choice.

Just given birth to a boy in May - what do you all recommend for schools within working distance of SW7? Not as much choice for boys it seems.

Hi Midge99, if you are coming from abroad you should look at queens college prep school in portland place. Its got a great reputation the girls are very happy, great results, and the head mistress is impressive. see for yourself. good luck !

Reading all the messages, no one seems to mention Hawkesdown house school for boys? any thoughts on the school? I have heard that it is very strong academically.

Also if you had the choice between Eaton house Belgravia and Thomas's london day school which would you choose?

Finally any thoughts on the best nurseries in the W8, W11 neighbourhood?

Thanks!

When I went to Falkner house, Mrs Nunes was still head, Miss Thomas Deputy.
At the 1983 reunion, Miss Worth made 150 alumni jump out of their skins by saying "Hands on heads" - because we all did, wine glasses in hand!

You never forget the jelly bean hats or the capes.
But I bet the competition to see who could be wearing the OLDEST summer dresses has gone.

It was an excellent school then and seems to be weathering pretty well.

Talkinpeace when did you leave? I left in 83 and the school has been back in my thoughts now I have a daughter after 3 boys! I was very very naughty back then and dyslexic which unfortunately was not picked up so I swing from having wonderful memories to some pretty poor ones. I don't want to discount the school as I have friends from back then who loved it but I am slightly nervous. I spent many mornings outside "prep" classroom sitting on the main stairs with my maths workbook on my lap and being told I could only come back in when I completed the work. On one occasion I stayed there until lunch! I did not learn my timetables or how to tell the time until I was 9. I don't blame the school just maybe a couple of teachers at the time who were not familiar with dyslexia. That being said miss Thomas was an angel (truly) and with patience, after school tuition AND constant confidence building I went on to Downe House and have never looked back. I will look at fh for my daughter with interest and an open mind

Coniger
I left a long time before you did!
When I was there my mother had to persuade them NOT to switch me from left to right handed!
I am sure that they have moved with the times on awareness of learning styles but hope that they do not kowtow to giving all kids an easy time.
Good luck for your DD

I looked at both Falkner and Glendower for my DTD, but decided to send her go GH with her brother.

DH and I like both schools a lot, but ultimately found Falkner to be more caring and cosy than Glendower, which seemed to be a bit of a pressure house. I think both are great schools though, and I know people who are happy at both, though I think Glendower is a bit stricter.

Dear EleanorD - I hope you don't mind me writing but I just joined mumsnet today and came across this thread which was written ages ago. I can't really even tell anyone why I was looking at this thread only that I desperately need some advice and bizarrely just what I was looking for came up and I came across your name. However being a Mumsnet virgin I only want to message you and don't want anyone else to see! Can I do that! Really really need your advice!!! I appreciate this is random but for various reasons I think you are the person I might need to talk to!!! Many thanks

Falkner House vs Glendower vs Ken Prep; does anyone have any opinions please? DD is going to the assessments for these 3 schools in January and I would be grateful for any views of she were fortunate to be offered a place at any of these. Have heard Falkner has a very small intake and biases towards older (Sept-Dec) children so this will probably count against us as DD is an April baby.

MMmomKK · 10/12/2015 20:57

It's hard to go wrong with any of these schools. It all comes down to location and fit - which of them did you like best when you visited? Which Headmistress was eases too talk to?

Alpha75 · 12/12/2015 18:07

I liked all 3 but know they are all oversubscribed. I know the choice may not be ours when it comes down to it but would love anyone's input who has had any experience of the schools (either via the assessment process or actually at the school)

Lolakath19 · 31/01/2016 12:25

Hi Alpha75, did you hear from the sschools and which one did you choose at the end and why?
