apparently he is "totally uninterested in writing and will only read when he wants too" bearing in mind that he is 4 and is able to recognise words and letters and get the gist of a story using the words he recognises and the pictures.

it scared us, she made it sound like he was very behind and would need special help.

he started reception last week and his new teacher pulled me aside to say that she is moving him into the top group for maths. his able to count, add and subtract in his head and is even able to do the 2x table. she acknowledged that he couldnt read as such and doesnt like writing but dismissed it with "some people don't, he is bright enough to learn - thats enough"

so, panic over and a little bit of a preen if i may?

Well done your DS!!

How ridiculous you were made to feel bad about a 4 year old not being able to read and write - that is what school is for! Stupid nursery - probably felt bad that they hadn't got him to read but they shouldn't label him behind because they haven't grasped the basics of child development - that children don't all develop at the same rate in the same way. Some aren't ready to read and write at 4 or whatever but that doesn't make them behind.

My DS2 was exactly as your DS. He is in Yr 1 now and doing well with reading and writing, not top of the class but OK. He just didn't want to do it at pre-school but knuckled down at school because he knew he had to (they weren't bothered though) He is also in the top set for maths and can do things in his head his Yr 5 brother still doesn't do easily - he is good at reading/english and not maths though.

Makes you want to go back to the nursery and tell them how wrong they are, doesn't it?

thanks Niecie. we move in about 6-7 months, so may just do that!

interesting about your DS2 though, it makes you wonder how many kids genuinely do just get lost in the system and branded "difficult" or "lazy"
