She suddenly started to get very bad at maths. 2 months ago 33 + 50 was no problem for her, even when you just ask her, without writing it on the paper. And now, out of blue she has problem, or mental block as I can see that she is thinking hard but usually comes with the wrong answer. So I try to explain on the simplier example like 13 + 13, she understand we altogether come to result 26 and when I ask her next what 14 +14 she doesnt know again. Doesn't help I have no nerves and start to shout at her, poor little thing I am at the end, as if she wont move on, her school results will go horribly wrong. Please help

sounds like you are feeling stressed about this and so is she. can you make it fun with gaes and books? Are her sudden lack of abilities due to pressure?
I remember working in a greengrocers when I was a teenager and struggling to add up with a battle axe watching me, really really struggling. Afterwards the owner asked me "Maths not your strong point eh?" Was too embarrassed to admit I planned to study it at A level and in fact went on to do it as a degree!

You are right, I am so stressed about it, I used to have also problem with maths, but at age of 17, when it really got hard. I am thinking about hiring some professional help, maths teacher or student. Would that be better? As no one would be growling at her. if she gets it wrong.

what do her teachers think?

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2010 15:17

wasn't implying you are a battle axe btw

Might Kumon maths be appropriate in this case? One of my friends has her DD doing it because she was unconfident and slow at arithmetic - it seems to consist of doing lots and lots of simple sums.

Praguemummy · 15/01/2010 15:33

Her teacher says, that she has no problem with multiplying 2.7=14 but noted that adding and extracting is a problem, particulary when just asked. Otherwise all other subjects are fine. Kumon maths is some new version of maths, then? Here in Czech Republic school system is still little bit old fashioned. Will try to find out more about this, then.

I don't know much about Kumon, TBH - what I saw there didn't seem to be anything new about it, just lots and lots of practice. I only mentioned it because it seemed like my friend's DD was somewhat similar to yours in struggling with arithmetic.

try mathswhizz?
it is online and is £15 a month

we have had the same issue here.

I 'blame' partitioning. Mine could add up 27+38 by counting on or rounding and subtracting in Yr 1 but in Yr 2 they start having to write it all out
20+30=50
7+8 =15
50+15 =65

They are too impatient to bother so are often 10 out one way or another

My ds explained that there was now no room for number bonds etc as his ahed was too full of other stuff

Plus they view basic stuff as babyish from reception so dont like practising it

Subtraction has suffered far worse!
