DD1 had her school report for last term on Monday and it wasnt very good! It said her behaviour is inconsistant, at times she she the best in the class and other times really bad.

She said DD1 is immature and often sulks if she is told to do something. She is very slow with her work and doesnt get nearly as much done as she should.

She is also on the special needs register, which I knew nothing about, because she is not up to the level that you would expect for her age (she is 8).

The areas she is behind in are English, spelling, writing, pesentation and maths everything else is within the expected range.

I went in to see DD1s teacher and asked if there was a possibility DD1 could be dyslexic, my brother, dad and I all are or were at school. Her teacher said that they dont even test for it any more!

Basically what I want to know is is this correct and from what I have said do I have reason to be concerned?

Sorry for the long post but this is worrying me. Thank you for reading.

They test for dyslexia at our school. If you google there is a check list of dyslexic traits that you could take a look at. Might be worth going to see an educational psychologist if you suspect she has it.

They test for dyslexia at my children's school and all the ones I've heard of.

They may not test for it at the school or in county (as in our county too), but they need to support her. If she's failing to make progress then it may be worth them seeking advice from an outside consultant such as an ed psych or a special needs consultant, depending on your county's set up.

Ask to see the senco to discuss it. If you get no joy, have a chat with your local parent partnership, who can explain how things work in your region.

Dyslexics typically do have a 'spiky profile' - good at somethings, really not good at others. There are other indicators such as sequencing (does she know days of week), co-ordination can be a problem as can shoelaces.

If she is on the special needs register and has an iep then legally you should have been told ( under the special needs code of practice, which you can also google - it'll be on teachernet). What support has she been given?

Try to keep the communication positive, you're all working for the same ends.
