to use for 3 and 4 year olds, as well as me! I'm sure I've got them!

Conditioner and a nitty gritty comb.

Jux · 04/01/2010 17:50

hedrin hedrin hedrin

It's wunnerful stuff lol

fernie3 · 04/01/2010 17:55

we used hedrin yesterday my daughter had them, gave everyone else a good comb but couldnt find a single one- do I still need to treat everyone? (five of us)

i couldnt find any on her today how long is it until you know if it worked!

Clarabel22 · 04/01/2010 18:24

Nitty gritty and conditioner, but make sure you repeat after a couple of days, then again a week later, continuing until you've had a few clean combings.
Nitty gritty is great as it removes the eggs where most combs just remove the headlice and leave the eggs behind.

moominotter · 04/01/2010 21:28

Nitty gritty comb and conditioner.

Repeat after couple of days.

Repeat a week later.

Repeat a week later.

Repeat a week later.

Continue as above until they leave school .

Seriously, whatever method you use, please keep repeating it. So many people think they have treated their kids headlice and that they have gone after one or two treatments/combs. But they haven't got rid of all the eggs and their kids are just reinfecting everyone else again - it drives me up the wall....

Jux · 04/01/2010 22:03

Clarabel22, it is important that you repeat the hedrin a week later. As with any other product, the eggs can still hatch in that time and if you don't repeat the treatment then you're very likely wasting your time doing the first.

The rest of you may not have got them, but is it worth the risk?

seeker · 04/01/2010 23:37

Hedrin CAN'T not work if you use enough and leave it in for long enough!

BlueberryPancake · 05/01/2010 16:39

OK my husband got back from pharmacy with Full Marks solution yesterday it's like an oil which is easy to put on, and then it makes it really easy to comp through (with comb in the box). I've followed the treatment for me and husband as well, and today the kids look clear but really I'm not sure I have removed all the eggs (I can't see them could someome PLEASE tell me what they look like).

I will repeat the treatment in 7 days for sure, I really don't want to have them back.

If it happens again I'll buy Hedrin, but it looks to me as if Hedrin and Full Marks lotio have same properties and both work in ten minutes plus combing.

Oh yes, and does anything else hlp keep them 'at bay'? Someone recommended the Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner from Tesco has anyone here tried it? Did it help?

Cheers

BlueberryPancake, open my link and read it

seeker · 06/01/2010 06:04

There is nothing that keeps them completely 'ay bay" although there are plenty of people who will sell you stuff they claim will. There are 3 ways of getting rid of them - i) pesticides, which are only moderately effective, are potentially harmful and which encourage the lice to mutate to become resistant,ii) non-toxic means of killing them, like silicone based products that suffocate the live lice, which work well, don't produce resistance and are non toxic to humans, but which are very expensive and need to be reapplied religiously to kill the emerging lice and iii) wet combing with a metal comb and a combing agent of some sort, like hair conditioner. This is very effective so long as you do it really thoroughly - taking at least 30-40 minutes per head every time, and repeating on days 3 and 7 in order to get the hatching lice. Virtually all the "magic" products people try to sell you on the internet are combing agents of various sorts with scents or herbs or oils added. If you read the small print they ALL say something like "comb thoroughly with the enclosed fine tooth comb to remove the lice". Save your money, use cheap conditioner.

Nit repellent sprays, tea tree oil and all the rest might slow them up a bit, but NOTHING keeps them away completely. The best - and cheapest - way to keep on top of them is regular wet combing of EVERYONE in the family whether they think they've got them or not. Do it once a week in front of the telly with a bar of chocolate. If you find any, do it every 3 days until you're clear, then go back to weekly. It's a pain, but it works.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 06/01/2010 06:58

seeker is right

inkyfingers · 06/01/2010 14:07

I hate the thought of chemicals on the skin, maybe more than I hate lice? But I've just done the wet combing thing day after day. Have boys so short hair really helps. Keep nit comb in bathroom and run through kids hair carefully 4/5 times a day. Then use the comb regularly (instead of normal one) to hopefully stop them in their tracks. Probably lucky but haven't seen nits for some years now.

Takver · 06/01/2010 19:33

IME very short hair dyed with chemical dye & covered with hair wax discourages them - at least, I don't get nits, I think the little buggers suffocate before they get to skin level. Have suggested it to dd, but she wasn't convinced

I've used the Full Marks stuff & I wasn't convinced it was any better than combing with the nitty gritty comb & conditioner. But DEFINITELY a 'nitty gritty' (it has these funny grooves' rather than just a standard nit comb.

PestoSnowMonster · 06/01/2010 19:35

Nitty gritty comb & conditioner,

Repeat every 3 days or so.
