We have just moved to the area and my ds will start school next january but of course we have already submitted the application. I am now tearing myself to shreds as I feel a right or wrong school will make such an impact and I dont want to get it wrong!!!

He, unless we change our minds, will go to mayflower primary schoo that opened this september. He is at the nursery there now and LOVES it but I'm.....not so keen. We moved from a different town and his old pre school was excellent in every way. Maybe I'm just spolit....help please!

Hiya

I'm from Plymouth myself but don't live there. However, there are other Plymouth mnetters that can advise on schools so if you put out a shout for Plymouth mnetters, you may get some feedback on Mayflower school.

Whereabouts in Plymouth is the school - I can at least tell you if its chav central or not

Hehehe it is chav central lol or atleast that how everyone knows it . I am quite worried about that too as there seems to be 2 conflicting views on whether or not area, social standing etc have an impact on a childs education......hmmmmmm

I don't think it matters so much at primary level but I think when you get to secondary level, that's when you need to start looking at the influences around your child..its entirely up to you though. You obviously aren't comfortable with the choice you have made so I would go with your instinct.

I should also add, that my cousin worked at Plymouth High School for girls and she said that the girls there were really badly behaved and that the older ones were 'like dogs on heat'...so what seems like a better school on paper, isn't always the case!

totalmadness · 05/01/2010 21:33

Lmao at dogs on heat!! My aunt went to an all girls school and has told me a lot of stories about sneeking out to meet boys or sneeking them in!! So def no single sex schools for us lol

I am uneasy only because where we live now, out of choice I should add, is very different from where I come from (upper middle class verging on snobby if I'm honest) and my husband grew up in a similar area to where we are now and the stories he tells of his schools are enough to send you running for the hills with your education otherwise booklets

I wouln't worry to much, as they get to secondary age you have the Grammar school options which evens things out. My son went to a crap village school then passed the 11plus and went to the boys grammar school, got all As at O and A Level.
