Anyone else's reception dc totally exhausted now

It's a nightmare at the moment with ds. He had tonsilitis which knocked him for six and now has gone from being a bit tired as you'd expect towards the end of the first term at school to being an absolute nightmare.
Am hoping he catches up on his sleep this weekend and is more himself. I am sick of the tired and emotional stuff and the naughtiness from a boy who isn't really like that normally.
Roll on the end of term.

DD is reception age (5) though she is in the third year of pre-school here in France.

Since the October half-term she has had the odd day off to catch up on sleep and down time. IMO it is a false economy not to keep them at home from time to time at this age - a day watching TV can work wonders!

yummyyummyyummy · 10/12/2009 10:13

Yes.DD is 4 (5 at xmas) and is 'past it'.she has been so hyper the last couple of weeks that it takes her ages to wind down and is rarely asleep before 9.30.

MrsMattie · 10/12/2009 10:15

Yep. His behaviour after school has got noticeably worse since they've been doing afternoon productions of the school play this week. He is totally hyper one minute and then a sobbing, cranky mess the next.

Bucharest · 10/12/2009 10:16

Yep, although I'm like Bonsoir, dd is actually 6 and just started primary. Morphs into divilchile, tells me she's leaving home, has one swollen tonsil that won't go away, totally absolutely knackered.
Cannot wait for Christmas.

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 10/12/2009 10:17

Yep, just had gastroenteritis and is a soggy heap of cotton wool.

Very sad and heavy iyswim. Holiday much needed, we will be taking it easy and not doing the usual frantic Christmas stuff like visiting.

Smithagain · 10/12/2009 10:17

Totally exhausted and being very deliberately naughty and cheeky in a way that is not normally like her. Thankfully my memory is long enough to know that DD1 was just the same at this stage in her first term and January was much, much nicer. So just going for lots of early nights and counting the days till the end of term! Christmas holidays will be as calm as we can manage, to give her a chance to rediscover herself!!!

thegrammerpolicesic · 10/12/2009 10:31

Exactly Smith. My ds is not normally naughty (not just my view - even the teacher said it) and it's making me sad to see him so out of sorts.

Luckily I knew from posts on MN to expect this but it's still hard to see him like this.

At one stage we were considering leaving for a weekend away on the Fri pm which is the last day of term and I'm SO glad we didn't book it. Would have been a disaster.

I can't win, he cries about going to school but won't accept the idea of missing a day as he likes it

DS1 is 6 and in P2 in Scotland, equivalent of Y1 in England and he is exhausted. It is a particularly long term up here too.

He really needs the break now. It's the first time I've noticed him tired like this.

Fayrazzled · 10/12/2009 10:50

My reception aged son is coping much better than I expected but is definitely tired and a little pale and wan.

I am definitely looking forward to the holiday though! I can't wait for 2 weeks at home with him and his little sister, without the school run. I'm imagining lots of cosy mornings playing in our PJs, late breakfasts, cuddles on the sofa, and just hanging around together doing not very much. Shame about Christmas in the middle. We could do with another week of holiday I think to get over Christmas!

dd broke her leg 4 days into the school year and was in a cast for 9 weeks and has had every bug going on top of that. she's missed loads of days this term and looks like death warmed up

mrsshackleton · 10/12/2009 16:34

exhausted - tick

tantrummy - tick

shouty - tick

Oh, sorry that's me. . Dd1 is also all those things but she has the excuse of being four, I have none

Smithagain · 10/12/2009 17:32

LOL - you certainly aren't the only one, Mrsshackleton!

AllarmBells · 11/12/2009 11:42

Mine too, DD aged 4, 5 in early Jan and only doing 3 full days a week so one of the oldest kids to do part time. Hasn't had any illnesses (touch wood) but at the end of the day has a little white face and shadowy eyes.
Can I add "weepy" to MrsShackleton's list?!

Fayrazzled, what a wonderful description of school holiday activities, that's exactly what I'm aiming for too. Will try and limit the remaining Xmas shopping to a few hours online, and answering the door to deliveries!

thegrammerpolicesic · 11/12/2009 12:45

I wonder how long it'll take them to bounce back in the holidays?

Runoutofideas · 11/12/2009 18:45

All of dd's friends are like this - crying for no reason, meltdowns galore. Dd1 seems to be faring better than most but she "luckily" had a week off 3 weeks ago due to having grommets fitted and her adenoids out. It actually seems to have done her the world of good to effectively get an extra half-term holiday!

hollyhobbie · 11/12/2009 19:07

really relieved to read this thread! I've been at the library today checking out parenting books as DD has turned into an absolute monster!
Roll on Christmas!

trickerg · 11/12/2009 20:01

Our reception teachers are being very naughty too. [GRIN] They must need a holiday!

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 11/12/2009 20:07

dd (also 6 P2 Scotland) is a total nightmare.
She is shattered and with all the excitement of Christmas concert, Christmas dinner and all the other fun things in school she is high as a kite all day at school and comes crashing down in a tired, grumpy mess by hometime.
She has had a few wee bugs and a duvet day plus a week off since October hols and is really needing the rest to catch up too.
Mind you a day or 2 into the holidays and she will be fully charged and driving me mad again

jaded · 11/12/2009 23:01

I think it is insane to expect 4 and 5 years olds to do the same week as a ten year old. Who on earth decided that? And before you say that reception is just play, it's not. And play for children is work too ( in between the endless lining up, sitting on the mat, changing for PE, sitting in assembly etc). They will definitely be ready for the army at the end of it!

mrz · 12/12/2009 10:57

I'm a reception teacher and it isn't only the children who are exhausted
jaded my children only line up for lunch (which they don't mind) don't spend much time sitting on mats, don't get changed for PE and don't attend whole school assemblies because they aren't always relevant to such young children and have more energy at the end of the day than I can muster right now

NorbertDentressAngel · 12/12/2009 11:03

Yes, DS is exhausted.

He went to a party straight after school yesterday and by the time he came home he just wanted to sit on my lap and go to sleep.

This morning hes got a massively high temp. so is dosed up on Calpol and lying on the sofa watching TV.

Next week is a really busy week too with lots of parties, carol service, meeting with friends etc so I might have to re-think things

jaded · 12/12/2009 17:58

mrz - glad the children at your school have a more relaxing time, but I doubt they have boundless amounts of energy when they get home. Adults are used to spending 6 and a half hours a day at work, very young children are not. I don't understand why they can't finish at one or two o'clock!

mrz · 12/12/2009 18:06

Jaded I'm not suggesting they have a relaxing time (quite the opposite) just that their time is spent doing things small children should be doing to tire themselves out, much the same as they would hopefully be doing in the home.

thegrammerpolicesic · 13/12/2009 22:39

Hurray had 'normal ds' back today after he had a monster sleep and lots of rest this weekend. It was such a relief after the last week.
Bet he reverts to endoftermitis child tomorrow though what with the nativity concert etc
