any tips/ideas? DD is great at counting and at home we've been looking at adding up. I just showed her on her fingers but wondered if there is a specific 'technique' used at school -or am i trying too hard??

We've had lots of info from school about phonics and can see how much work they are doing on reading etc There just doesn't appear to be anything maths related.

I know she's only in reception and I'm not pushing her but she is genuinely interested.

Fingers are fine, honest.
Make it visual -- use oranges, draughts pieces, sweets.
Don't forget to subtract, too.
They'll move onto number bonds next term, how many combos add to ten.
If U can go in to help out in a maths lesson you'll learn a lot.

With ds, also very interested, we relate it to things he loves, e.g. if there were x trains in the depot and three more came in, how many would there be? That sort of thing.

Broken - are you sure they normally do number bonds in the second term - I thought that was normally a year 1 thing?

DD1 did number bonds in reception
i found a basic abacus helpful. fingers also good though!

the most important thing in reception is they are identifying one object to one count - it is quite common for them to count at a different pace to the actual objects they are counting iykwim. (saying 1,2,3,4,5,6 happily but not actually corresponding this to the items)
