did anyone see this discussed on The Wright Stuff the other week? I was laughing when one of the panel said that she often felt that she needed to dress up a bit and put her makeup on to pick her dc up from school and Matthew's big question was does the mothers mafia exist?
Wel does it ?

In certain respects I have found it does. I am not a makeup wearer, but, have seen women in our supermarket in the morning looking dull and ordinary, yet transformed at pickup time. make up, shiney nails and glam clothing. I am not sure why TBH. There are small cliques of these shiny ladies (dd's words for them) who seem to try to outdo rival posse's for having the latest MBK shoes, current pose trend or a particular sort of track suit.

The school mafia exists in my school! I've been trying to get in the front row of school plays for years, but it's always the same faces taking up the first two rows and reserve seats for other mafia mums.

do you write for the daily mail?

i don't see what's weird about putting make up on to pick up your kids.

it doesn't necessarily follow that you are a bitch or have a superior complex because you've got a bit of slap on.

I do think that how, and for how long - and indeed whether - you prepare for The School Run says a lot about the importance which you attach to it as a social event.

A great number of parents - including pretty much all the dads - see it as a Thing To Be Done. You come out of the house as you are. I work from home and wear the same thing from morning to night. I would not put a special jacket or tie on to go and collect my children from school, as if I were going to an interview or something. And yet a sizeable cohort of the mothers come dressed and made-up for it as if they are going to a big work event or a party.

I have yet to fathom why. If you know and like a lot of the other parents, and want to chat and socialise, then surely it doesn't matter how you look because they will accept you for how you are. And if you don't, then why would it matter?
