Are children required to have this in Year 2?

And if they are, how much flexibility can be worked into the system - for examnple would it be OK for the class to miss numeracy & literacy once a week for 10 weeks to practice for the nativity?

No they are not required to do it but some schools choose to work this way

We try to avoid missing too many literacy and numeracy lessons around Christmas but it is inevitable, since they tend to take up a large proprtion of the day, that some will go! (especially as we are a church school and Christmas is considered pretty important!)

The new Literacy framework includes a whole strand on speaking and listening and another section on drama. So I'm sacrificing a couple of sessions a week so we can practice our Christmas thingie.
10 weeks practice seems a little excessive though.

I had to chuckle at 10 weeks!

The kids must be heartily sick of it already!

We haven't started ours yet!

Wanders off to write a Nativity play in her spare time!

Jux · 23/11/2009 20:18

Nativity? DD didn't have a nativity play in year 2, nor in year 1, nor in years 3 - 5. I don't think they're doing a nativity this year either. In fact, the only nativity she's ever had anything to do with was at nursery.

Don't like to scare you OP, but it's only 4 weeks 'til the end of term..

primarymum · 23/11/2009 20:32

We do one practically every year! On the odd occasion we might do a Christmas Performance (I think we've done two in the six years I've been here) but it's always accompanied by a Carol Concert. Generally however we save the major performance until the Summer (Wind in the Willows next Summer!)and the yr R/1/2 do a Nativity whilst the rest of the school sing the accompanying songs. Our theme this year is "A Victorian Christmas" so it will be all the old favourites I love a traditional Christmas!

We're trying not to miss phonics, literacy or numeracy even though nativity is on Dec 10th. It's an easy tableau, and we've been learning songs for a few weeks in our KS1/Yr assembly. We have wasted weeks and weeks and weeks on our Christmas shows in the past, and it's just not worth it, as the parents love them whatever the standard of acting! This year, we're doing something a bit different and going outside, with real pony and sheep. (Probably never to be repeated...!!) Then we're serving mulled wine and refreshments (cooked by the children).

blimey trickberg, live animals am impressed. I think our lot might sing us a song or two and wear some self made festive hats. Still cute though.

They've been practicing for ages already but it's only recently I've realised that they've been missing numeracy & literacy for rehersals, as well as practicing during their time tabled music sessions.
I think the teacher involved is secretly missing a career in the West End.
