What year would you expect an average child to be able to "sort 2D and 3D shapes in a Carroll or Venn diagram"?

It's been put down as a target for my daughter in year 4 but I googled and it is listed as a target for year 3 in the NC. Would like to know what is going on!

dd did them in Year 3, and the concept of graphs etc in year 2. Is it an iep though ?

kittybam · 20/11/2009 17:28

Thanks Lizs, but what's an iep? It's a state school if that helps?

Dependent on ability, not year group. Numeracy Strategy Framework is just a guideline. For more able, shapes may be more complex and the properties being asked about more advanced. I'd avoid google for stuff like this tbh.

True, google just made me more confused. The target sounds so vague to me. So I decided to ask mumsnet instead. Does anyone know of some good websites for shape sorting?

IEP = individual learning plan . It is often put in place for a child who is struggling a bit (not necessarily SEN) to give them specific targets to achieve with a bit more support .

kittybam · 20/11/2009 17:41

I see No, this is just a progress report for my daughter in Year 4 with a sentence giving targets in English and Maths. The target for English has a spelling mistake in it so I am a bit .

That's not such a good sign!

too difficult?

No variation though. Will keep an eye out for more.

Previous link came from here:

some seem quite good

kittybam · 20/11/2009 18:01

Thanks for that one, I think she could do that one but I will let her try it and then we'll see. The report says 3D shapes as well.

It would be great if we had an example that we could work through together at home. At the moment I'm not sure whether or not it's work that they've done already and my daughter does not "get", or whether they've not done it at school yet (and if not, why not) but is one of the NC targets or whether it just has to be more complex than what they've done already.

It is a learning objective in year 3.
