HELP, would your DC be able to do this homework - 2nd year in school

Ok, DD is 7yo in her second year of school in Switzerland. (They don't start until 6yo)

She has this homework, translated from French

Use each time the numbers 3 5 and 8.

Form 2 3-digit numbers in such a way that the difference between these 2 numbers is either:

a. the greatest possible

b. the smallest possible

Is that not a bit advanced? They are only doing very basic maths at the moment, adding and subtraction.

my ds would definately not be able to do that. He is 9

drivinmecrazy · 18/11/2009 18:34

showed DD (8) and she did it very quickly. Think the instructions are a bit complex, although what they are being asked to do is not, IYSWIM

lolapoppins · 18/11/2009 18:39

My 7yr old gave me this look when I showed him.

Obviouslyanamechanger · 18/11/2009 18:41

Well, perhaps that's why Switzerland has such a good reputation in education.

MmeLindt · 18/11/2009 18:41

Ok, just spoke to another mum, it seems that there is a translation problem.

They want them to write down all the 3 digit numbers possible from 3 5 and 8

Then which is the biggest number and which the smallest.

Our(French) babysitter did the homework with her earlier and got us all confused.

What hope have I when even the French don't understand it?

Thanks guys.

Ahhh, thats why then, even I didn't really get it from the instuctions in OP!

MmeLindt · 18/11/2009 18:44

In French, in case anyone can speak French.

Utilise à chaque fois les chiffres 3 5 et 8. Forme 2 nombres de 3 chiffres, de telle maniere que la différence entre ces 2 nombres soit.

a. la plus grande possible
b. la plus petite possible

Answer:

358
385
538
583
835
853

a. 853

b. 358

Is that right?

Well, perhaps she understood correctly, just didn't manage to translate to English

WilfSell · 18/11/2009 18:45

So you mean

358 and 853 (difference 495)

and

358 and 385 (difference 27)

?

Pretty complex instructions but pretty straightforward problem - it is asking for the biggest and smallest numbers you can arrange I think.

I reckon my now 5 yo will be able to do such a thing in a couple of years time, based on what his brother (now 10) can do.

MmeLindt · 18/11/2009 18:45

she keeps writing the 5 the wrong way around

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

OK missed your next post. Yes. What you said That is much easier.

WhatDidISayRoy · 18/11/2009 18:49

i understand it now that it has been explained! So to follow from my previous post, I think DS 9 would be able to do it.

MmeLindt · 18/11/2009 18:49

YAY! She has done it.

After all that, she found it really easy.
