Hi,

I took my 6yr old son out of mainstream school in September because basically the school was terrible. We thought we would give our son a little time to get it out of his system, with a view to returning to school. We found a school which we like, we are going back to visit it tomorrow. Now we seem to banging our heads against a brick wall with the lea. Nobody knows what is going on, I have no idea whom I have to speak with, what procedure I am meant to go through etc. I have tried getting in touch with the sen officer (my son has a statement but attended mainstream school), but she is nowhere to be found. All I want is for my son to go back to this new school after january. Can anyone please help? Thanks, Debbie

Why can't the school you like help you? What county are you in?

We are in northumberland. We are going to the school in the morning to see the head, but the sen officer reckons we will have to wait until the school decide if they can "meet his needs."

What has Head said?
I didn't know schools could turn a SEN child down like that.
Is there anything useful in here?: contact details maybe?

ok, so we went to the school and the head was an absloute bi**h. She basically said her school couldn't cope with ds, we should send him to an special needs school, we should send him to another school, and best of all, they have no spare staff to act as a sen assistant (!!!...I corrected her lol). She didn't even bother to show us round the school as she had obviously made her mind up that she didn't want her sat results mucked up by a sen child. I am so annoyed I could scream.

What is his SEN? Does Northumberland actually have SN schools? I think you need to describe your situation on SN board here, maybe to find out what your rights are.
The funding for SEN is changing in our county (for the worse, I suspect); she may be telling truth about not having resources.

Our local town has a special school, but it is over subscribed. No other school in the area feels they can meet his needs. But surely the law is that the government must provide a suitable education according to the childs needs? I have an appointment with my mp so shall see what he says. His sen is autism.
