How much should DS read to you a day?

Has anyone any suggestions as how my DS and I should read books?

We have 2 books a week from school and we've always read the whole book together at night - while they were only 20 pages with not too many words on! I would read a page, then he would read a page. The next night we would alternate pages. So we read the book a few times before returning it to school to be exchanged.

Now we're getting free reading books from the school (lots more pages and words), we don't manage to finish a book in a half a week as its too much! My DS also likes me to read to him as well as him read to me.

Do you think its a good idea to read a few pages alternatively, then for me to read a few to him before sleeptime?

Not sure how to tackle it? Don't want to just let him read it all to me as he enjoys me reading to him and I enjoy that too. But want to make sure he reads enough.

How old? What year?

DD is 7y and in Y3. They are expected to read 15-20 minutes every night - some out loud, some can be silent.

Last year school book only came home once a week and they were to read 8-10 pages of it. Rest of time there were supposed to read regularly at home.

In Y1 was 6-10 pages of school book per night.

Bedtime reading I have always done different books, rather than DD's reading book. Have never done alternate pages with DD's school books either, but have done that with her home books in the past.

DS is just 7 and in Yr 2. Is that 8-10 full pages without pictures during the week or each day?

8-10 pages of whatever book they were on at the time, so pictures or not as appropriate, and depending on ability of course. If tey wanted to read more then they were recommended to read home or libaray books instead. I reckon part of this system was to avoid some parents trying to push their children through the school books asap IYSWIM.

Teacher did individual reading daily at school too using same book.

Ds, 9, reads 20 mins or so to me of his school book.
We pick other books for me to read to him.

Oh sorry - in Y2 book only came home one night a week, so it was 8-10 pages that night. Rest of Y2 reading was own books, with recommendation to be little and often, or as the child chose, but key was regularly.

when dd (8) is set reading it is for 20 minutes at year 2 it was probably around 15 minutes . Reality is that both dc will read again in bed.

We ask all our children to read for a minimum of 15 minutes a night, either with parents or without!
