I have a DD who will be 5 in a couple of months. She is desperate to play an instrument because her 3 r siblings all play 2 instruments each.
Have been teaching her the recorder but her hands are not really big enough .She is small for her age and he hands are quite tiny.small hands seems to be a family failingt !
Are there any instruments where her size wouldn't be an obstacle ?

Xylophone or glockenspiel? You can get some fairly decent ones (with the 'black' notes) for around £20, and she could sing along.

What about a sopranino recorder?
like this. They are
a bit high pitched but easier for little hands
to reach.

I learnt to read music before I started school by playing nursery rhymes on chime bars - but get decent chime bars - something like this
otherwise it will drive you mad! You can play a surprising amount with just g a b c d - but more if you have and d e f sharp g a b c natural c sharp and d.

Mine has a ukulele - great fun and nice sound. Just the right size too and a C chord only needs one finger to be placed on the fret board. Plus mine like just playing about with them which must be good!
"like these"

I would say a ukulele too. According to chap in our music shop these are taking over from the recorder as class instruments in some local schools. Lots of teachers can play guitars so find them easier to teach than recorders.

Dd1 has a electric guitar (childs one), we got it for her when she was 5 (well it was given to us by her grandfather who works at the local tip). Its still a bit big for her so i would recommend a Ukulele.
