themumfromdelmonte I would have a gentle word and ask what the school's policy for reading books and as diplomatically as possible mention your son is reading and ask what you can do to help. Good Luck

Can I ask what stage ort peoples dc are on in Year 1? Dd doesnt take reading books home either and reads them in school so we have no idea what level she is on. The only time we know is on parents evening or if I remember to write in her book to ask!

yes - DS came home with a word tin each night - new word each day if they got it right in class the next day. Then once they'd got all 20 they started the reading scheme. Again they get a new book if they can read it in school. The scheme is 1,2,3 away. Seems pretty old but DS is quite happy. Am making sure I read lots of other stuff with him though so thta reading isn't juts a school thing.

the children in my reception class last year left me reading books between yellow and white book bands.

I don't use ORT (the first thing I did when I took over as Literacy coordinator was to parcel them up for schools in Africa)but they are level 3 to 10 or NC levels working towards level 1 to level3

DS (reception) will start bringing books home after Christmas.

No, they will be getting them from next week though.

We had no reading books throughout reception, but the children did bring home books every day, but the idea was that the parents read to them. If the child could read already there were books at all levels, so they could choose to bring something they could read. Seemed to make sense to me - ie books are important and lovely, but you choose which are important to you. Once in Yr1 they can still bring as many books home as they want for parents to read, but they also bring back a reading book that they must read to you.

We have been getting 4 books/week from week 2. 2 are wordless and 2 have a few words (Biffer and Chip type - dd quite likes them). My impression is that many of the children started school with good pre-reading skills and are now starting to read (and a few are reading properly). Dd is just starting to read words so the pace is just right for her.

She has rather a lot of books at home but they are mostly not suitable for learning to read so I am keen to follow the school's system.
