School food

Asked by a friend for views on her school's food - her DD is 5 by the way.

It's a private school in Europe and wanted to judge it by UK standards generally. School thinks all is ok with it, she isn't sure. What is missing if not ok? Cooking facilities are a bit limited and there is a tight budget. Sample menu:

Monday, morning snack: peaches (tinned) and water, lunch is spaghetti in tomato sauce with milk to drink, afternoon snack is mini biscuits with mixed berry juice to drink.

Tuesday, morning snack: watermelon and water to drink. Lunch is cream of tomato soup, soft rolls and milk. Afternoon snack is Waffles (frozen and then cooked).

Friday, morning snack: Apples and water to drink. Lunch is roasted chicken with brocolli and mash, afternoon snack is cake.

I think the biggest wrong thing that5 sticks out here is no choices.

And I have no idea where the number 5 came from in my post

Thanks. Facilities are limited and it's a very small school. Most in the neighbourhood are packed lunch only.

It goes up to Year 3 only and takes pre-schoolers.

No choice wouldn't bother me as that is the case at dd's school. I assume there is a veggie option though.

Dd doesn't get morning or afternoon snacks at school. They can take in a healthy snack such as fruit or vegetables for morning break.

Dd would be hungry if not getting a proper dinner and dessert though.

I think the biggest negative is it all seems to be processed foods.

Cortina · 30/09/2009 12:06

Thanks, I've fed back (pardon the pun)! the processed observation, any other thoughts from anyone? Thanks.

Not enough protein

Lunches seem quite snacky and many children would be quite hungry i think.

Sample menu from DD's primary school:

Morning snack of fruit/vegetable

Lunch:

Salmon fishcake/cheese quiche, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and ice cream

Roast chicken/couscous bake, potatoes, peas, carrots, sponge and custard

Vegetable pasta/tuna filled jacket potato, wholemeal baguette, coleslaw/peas, apple crumble and custard

Sweet and sour chicken/vegetables, wholegrain rice, sweetcorn, broccoli, oat & raisin cookie with fruit

All made on site, not processed (thank you Jamie), parental cost of £1.90 a day. Not sure I'd be too happy with your friend's DC's menu either.
