Is it usual to be able to email your child's teacher with your concerns etc?

I haven't done it, but I am able to email my DCs' teachers directly. From what I understand, they respond within 24 hours.

If I were to do it, I think it would be to inform the teacher of something (eg pet hamster died), rather than quiz the teacher. The other thing would be to give permission for a trip (my kids are terrible at giving me notes, and when they do, I often lose them).

We're encouraged to e-mail some pieces of homework, or specific items of interest to DD's kindy (reception) teacher so he can add them to the class blogg, but in general if we have queries/questions we use the home/school record book.

The high school teachers (same school) on the other hand prefer contact by e-mail, though recently we've been told that there may be a delay in responding as all teachers have to have their responses "cleared" by some senior member of staff who has obviously drawn the short straw!

I'm able to contact dd's teachers by email. I am very pleased about this, I was able to clear up a bullying issue in a day using the magic of t'internet.
All the teachers have a school email account which they encourage you to use
