Year 2 homework: "nets"?

Does anyone know what "nets" are?

Our homework says the following:

We will be looking at various nets of 3D shapes in 2 weeks' time and would like you to provide your child with a variety of small boxes so that your children can study individual nets in detail.

What the heck are nets? I have asked several parents and no one knows. The kids don't know either.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

here

If you can send in Toblerone boxes these are especially welcome as they make a nice change from the cube and cuboid nets you normally see ( Smarties and Lindt boxes are good too) This is an excellent opportunity to indulge in chocolate!

LIZS · 27/09/2009 11:29

It is the shape of the box when unfolded. ie like this

Goblinchild · 27/09/2009 11:30

You need to look for small boxes that are an interesting shape so that you can 'unzip' them along their seams to make them into a flat shape.
Then the children can see how a flat net can be folded to make a 3D shape.
Most boxes are a rather boring cuboid. Toblerone is a triangular prism. A Smartie tube is a hexagonal prism...notice the chocolate theme I have going here?

when did the start calling them nets then?

AtheneNoctua · 27/09/2009 11:31

I love MN. Thank you so much!

Ohh Primarymum, a teacher after my own heart.
I have mobiles in class to support their understanding and recognition of solid shapes. I selflessly contributed many of the boxes myself.

Goblinchild · 27/09/2009 11:32

They were called nets when I was in Primary...
1967.

IdrisTheDragon · 27/09/2009 11:32

They've been nets for years (since I was at primary school and I am 34).

Feel a bit sorry I have no need to eat lots of chocolate to produce nets for DS

primarymum · 27/09/2009 11:39

Goblinchild; the sacrifices we teachers need to make

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 11:54

Be really clever - take in a smarties tube because they are now hexagonal prisms. Ta daa!

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 11:55

bugger - goblin got there first

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 11:56

mentos tubes are cylinders

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 11:56

hwoever, those big ones are far too strong to break open

Goblinchild · 27/09/2009 12:02

'bugger - goblin got there first'

If it concerns the foodstuff of the Gods, always!
