Year 2 homework: "nets"?

Does anyone know what "nets" are?

Our homework says the following:

We will be looking at various nets of 3D shapes in 2 weeks' time and would like you to provide your child with a variety of small boxes so that your children can study individual nets in detail.

What the heck are nets? I have asked several parents and no one knows. The kids don't know either.

If you can send in Toblerone boxes these are especially welcome as they make a nice change from the cube and cuboid nets you normally see ( Smarties and Lindt boxes are good too) This is an excellent opportunity to indulge in chocolate!

It is the shape of the box when unfolded. ie like this

You need to look for small boxes that are an interesting shape so that you can 'unzip' them along their seams to make them into a flat shape.
Then the children can see how a flat net can be folded to make a 3D shape.
Most boxes are a rather boring cuboid. Toblerone is a triangular prism. A Smartie tube is a hexagonal prism...notice the chocolate theme I have going here?
